Don't unsubscribe from spam

Don't unsubscribe from spam

Howdy. No, I'm not advocating that we should all be happy to receive spam.

What happens when you unsubscribe or opt out of spam (there'll sometimes be a link at the bottom that says you can unsubscribe) is one of 2 things:

1. The spammer goes "Yahoo!! There is a person at this address. Let's put him on our list of confirmed addresses and keep sending him stuff. And we'll put him on our list to sell to other spammers."

2. Some links can load a little program on your computer that then sends out spam.

Just delete spam as it comes in. Don't open it and definitely don't buy anything from spam advertising. The only reason spam is so popular is because people buy the stuff they're trying to sell.

Cheers

Brendon

Great post Brendon. I hope your readers listen.

I also advocate the same thing on one of my blogs, Spam! It's Our Own FaultMichael

The same applies to e-mails with images in them. When an image gets downloaded, they can track what time you read the e-mail, and know that it actually went through. I know good e-mail systems like Outlook 2003 and Googles Gmail automatically block images in e-mails and then give you the option to download them if the message is not spam.
