I Don't Mean To Brag.....
I Don't Mean To Brag.....And I've just received another example of the post below.
This is from Tom of
Coding Monkey's - Web designers and developers in England.
"I've recently been expanding my business and have only 2 people (well, maybe myself as well for actually doing something) to thank for this:
Perry Marshall, for bringing all potential clients in
Yourself, for turning those potential clients into customers."
Nice of Tom to say "Thanks".
And although he's not really a competitor (he's in the UK) it's good to know that we can help each other
and build better businesses
and provide better solutions for our clients
and build a stronger industry that will continue to employ people
and build better futures for them and their families.
If you need a good
web designer in Suffolk, check out

It's Nice Dealing With Good People
It's Nice Dealing With Good PeopleI've just had a couple of coffees and a chat with a guy with a web design business here on the Gold Coast. One of the things we talked about was how most people within the web industry are pretty competitive and that, being a young industry, there is no real industry body that gels the various web design businesses together.
I think I've mentioned before on this site how I don't see other web companies so much as competitors, more as 'our' community.
I was trying to think of some good examples to illustrate that when I received an email from Anthony. Anthony is a guy who I've had emailed conversations with before discussing web business (Anthony's the guy behind
The Fuglies).
Gave Me A Heads UpAnyway, Anthony emailed me this morning to give me a heads up on a domain name that just came available that might be suitable for a market niche (resort web sites) that we have a strong presence in).
5 minutes later I had registered this great domain. Thanks Anthony.
Domain Was About To ExpireLast year I bought another domain name of a company for $650 US. With this one, I paid the money via an escrow service, they received, told the seller, he transferred the domain to me via the registrar he was using, I notified the escrow service and then they paid the seller.
I went in and changed all of the details.
A few months later I received an email from the seller. Apparently when I made the changes to the details I'd made a mistake with the email. The previous owner (
Domainsofnote.com) received my renewal notice and the domain name was set to expire in a few days.
They Could Have Renewed It ThemselvesThe seller emailed me to let me know to renew and told me to change the email address to mine. These guys could have let the domain lapse and then re-registered themselves for just a few dollars (and it would have been legal).
But they did the right thing and kindly let me know I'm a clown and to make sure I renewed the domain.
These are guys you want in the industry. Good, decent people who know what they are doing and who do the right thing.
The point of this post is, I guess, that there are some great operators out there who do a great job. But the tricky bit of being in business is that it's hard to find them.

Firefox Browser Worth A Try
Firefox Browser Worth A TryBeing a guy in the industry and someone with a degree of profile, I often get asked about the tools I use in my day to day work.
One of the tools is Firefox - a fabulous new browser that works very well and is well worth the download. You can now download it with the Google Toolbar so you can search right from your browser no matter what page you are on.
The other big feature I like is the tabbed browsing. That is, you have tabs across the browser that allow you to move between sites without having to open new windows. It's very cool and very handy.
Click on the Firefox image to the side of the page to download the browser now.

Checking your Web Site Statistics
Checking your Web Site StatisticsChecking your web site statistics is a critical component of any web site marketing strategy. After all, if you don't know what is or isn't working how will you know what to do next for best results.
We use a great statistics program that we install on client's web site for a fee, but now you can get Google to help you check your statistics for free!
Google has just released a
free analytics program.
All you do is sign up for an account, Google provides the code for your web site (you'll need to add that to every page of your web site) and that's it - you have access to quality statistical data about your web site.
A program well worth implementing.

Telling A Story Can Be The Best Marketing
Telling A Story Can Be The Best MarketingI've mentioned the importance of telling a story as part of your marketing in
an earlier post.
Last week I bought a notebook
from here. It's called a Moleskine notebook and duly arrived a few days later (not bad service for London to Australia).
"No Ordinary Notebook....."
This is no ordinary notebook. Within the cover the notebook came with a story - printed on an insert is these words:
"Moleskine is the legendary notebook used by European artists and thinkers for the past two centuries, from
Van Gogh to
Picasso, from
Ernest Hemingway to
Bruce Chatwin. This trusty, pocket-size travel companion held sketches, notes, stories and ideas before they were turned into famous images or pages of beloved books......"
And on it goes.
Click here for a version of the story on the main web site for the Moleskine.
The Notebook Has A StoryThe notebook has a story. It's a story that rings true. It's a story that seems authentic. And it's a story that fits the notebook.
Nice cover. Quality acid free paper. Elastic closure. Heavy. Solid. Classic. Earthy.
And it's a story that makes me feel special. Makes me feel like I should only use this notebook for important things.
No shopping lists for this notebook. Van Gogh would never do such a thing! Picasso would be livid with rage if I wasted these fine pages for such frivolity!
Telling A StoryTelling a story can be a great and very effective way to differentiate your product in the marketplace. In these days of an over-crowded, busy market it could be just the edge you are looking for.
What's your story?

What Are The Chances?
What Are The Chances?
To the left you'll see a mug that was handpainted by my daughter Laura at school 4 months ago. Heh, the lines aren't so straight but she painted it with love!
Laura hadn't seen the mug for 4 months when in yesterday's lesson the class had to handpaint drink coasters.
Laura said she had the choice of about 20 different colours to choose from in painting the coaster. She said she started painting and just painted whatever colours came into her head.
Perfect SequenceWhen Laura got the coaster home she fished out the mug from the back of the cupboard. Incredibly, the coaster she painted yesterday
matched up perfectly in sequence with the colours she painted on the mug 4 months ago.
Coincidence? She was amazed at the coincidence. And I would have been too except I've read Malcolm Gladwell's brilliant book '
Blink' where he talks "about the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye."
You see, what I think happened, and I'm sure
Malcolm would agree, is that Laura's mind remembered the colours and their sequence on the mug from 4 months ago.
Her random selection of colours and their sequence on the coaster was anything but. It was actually the incredible power of the mind showing off a bit and saying
"Heh, even though you don't remember with your conscious mind what colours you used, a part of your brain does.....and here they are."That's The PowerThat's the power of the mind and demonstrates the importance of first impressions. Because people will remember things (even if they don't think they do).
What your first impression like?

We're Just Minutes Away From Podcast Launch
We're Just Minutes Away From Podcast Launch
The work that goes into setting everything up for launch has been pretty extensive and just when we thought we had everything organised we discovered a fantastic little Flash player that allows you to stream in the audio without having to download the entire file.
Cool Bit Of Software

It's very groovy.
Anyway, I'd better get back to it.
Check out
Tailored Podcast in the next 25 minutes or so....and remember, if you listen you can enter our competition to win a Mini iPod. It's drawn Friday.

Why You Might Pay More....And Why Beautiful Models Earn Their Money
Why You Might Pay More....And Why Beautiful Models Earn Their Money
I had a brief conversation with a client today where we set up a meeting for next week. The client has received 3 quotes for his web project and we're the most expensive by far. The client is a savvy business guy and understands that quality sometimes costs more.
So he's keen to meet and discuss our proposal and why it is so much more than the others.
What My Job Is
My job is to demonstrate to the client our value. To justify paying more. Now I'll do that via testimonials, guarantees, examples of previous work, etc.
I'll discuss our experience, our contacts and our expertise and then quantify what that means to him and the impact all of that will have on his sales.
It's The Same Reason I Never Begrudge Models Their Money
As a marketer, over the years I've worked with models. We source models for various projects and it's fair to say that many people seem to baulk when we quote the hourly rate for a model.
But I think all models earn every single cent.
Let's say you pay $150 for a model for an hour. He/She doesn't just show up and stand about for an hour.
To look as good as they do they requires a whole lifestyle, not just an hour:
And if I can draw a long bow and compare modeling to what we do: it's not always about what you see that you pay for. It's the background stuff that makes the difference and costs the money to get.

It takes work to look this good
An Old Trick
Here's an old advertising and marketing tactic. Show a pretty girl in your advertising/marketing/blog/etc - it gets people's attention everytime. And when it's used in context it works even better!

I Bought Some Software.....And I Was Scared
I Bought Some Software.....And I Was Scared!Hello. Hope you and yours are well.
When I speak with clients about the factors that impact on their web site's success I generally mention the perception of risk as a key factor in the buying process. That is, if the client perceives their is any risk in dealing with your web site then they will not buy.
Because I say it so often I tend to underestimate just how important a factor it is.
Here's What Happened On MondayOn Monday I bought $150 bit of software online. I buy online a lot. And I generally buy from sites I already know. But this latest purchase was from a site I'd never bought from before.
I felt anxious during the entire buying process for one main reason:I was sure if this web site was legitimate. Sure, I checked everything out but I still had my dolubts.
And I had my doubts because the site hadn't been updated for months. Nothing new was on the site. My perception was that maybe, just maybe, there was actually no-one on the other end of the web site and that my order would never arrive.
A lot of people abandon their online purchase because they don't get the information and the assurance they need and want. Do everything you can to reduce the perceived risk of dealing with your business. Use these:
- Testimonials
- Staff photos
- Staff blogs
- Staff profiles
- Security assurances
- Very regular updates
- Guarantees
You'll see an instant increase in sales.
My software arrived today.

Personalise, Personalise, Personalise
Personalise, Personalise, PersonaliseI think, and going by the feedback we get many readers agree, that the best part of this web site is that we update it very regularly and that we personalise it as much as possible.
I find that's really important to make a connection with the audience that comes along and reads this site. Sure, I won't always get the content right - some stories are a bit dull, others are ones you might not agree with, and other still will be of no interest
Sometimes I'll say the wrong thing or do the
wrong thing according to some.
- Personalise your web site as much as possible.
- Personalise your business dealings as much as possible.
People like dealing with people. If your customers can get a real sense of who you are and what you represent then they'll be more likely to deal with you.
The Biggest Mistake I See With Web SitesThe biggest mistake I see with web sites is that businesses try and make themselves sound as huge as possible - and that means doing the boring corporate stuff.
You can always pick it - the 'About Us' page will have some corporate mumbo jumbo sounding stuff without identifying anyone in the business or the business address. My
'About me' page is mumbo jumbo, but at least it's real mumbo jumbo.
Personalise your site and let people know who you are and what your values are - at the very least you'll stand out.

Women Just Don't Get Men
Women Just Don't Get MenI know, I know. I'm not exactly giving fresh information here but it never ceases to amaze me.
I'll give you 2 examples. 1 long, 1 short.
# 1: I was in a
football tipping competition against a friend of mine. I lost. At the end of the season I owed him 7 cartons of the
best beer here in Australia. $350 worth of beer. Damn!
Anyway, this friend lives 2,000 kms away. I don't know him real, real well but in the same city I have my oldest friend (since
school days buddy, camping buddy, diving for
crayfish, drinking buddy, in his wedding buddy).
So I called up my old friend, I'll call him Dave (after all that's his name....... an oldie but a goodie!), and asked Dave to drop over the 7 cartons of beer.
A week or 2 later Dave and his wife came up to my city for a few days R & R. We went out to dinner as we always do. Now Dave and I, being the oldest of friends, cannot offend each other. We're blokes. It's an impossibility here in Australia for old, old male friends to offend each other.
"Let's Flip A Coin"Dinner came to $150 and Dave said" Let's flip a coin for it." So we did. And I won.
We went out for some post-dinner drinks. Another $50. Another flip of the coin. Another win to me! Woooohoooo.
My Wife Was HorrifiedMy wife was horrified! She couldn't believe that Dave paid for the beer and delivered it. And she couldn't believe that Dave and his wife Elanora came to our city and we went out for dinner and I flipped a coin to see who pays.
My thinking with Dave was the exact opposite: My thinking was "Sucker!"
(After all this is a guy who crashed into my little Gemini car in his
Landrover 20 years ago when I was stopped at a red light. He then proceeded to keep accelerating and trying to push me into the middle of the intersection!)
I was thinking that my $350 was down to $150. $200 in just 2 flips of the coin - did I say Wooooohooo already???! And the fact that I hadn't paid Dave the original $350 I owed him for a couple of weeks was even better!
Anyway, my wife wouldn't hear of it. She has applied pressure like only a wife can (all the married guys reading this blog are going "Yep, Brendon, I hear what you're saying.").
And get the upshoot of all this: I paid Dave his $350 for the beer. And the $200 for the dinner and drinks!
Dave rang today when he got the money in the mail. The only word he left on my voicemail?
"Sucker!!"
# 2: When my wife is away I don't make the bed. I figure it's only going to get messy again as soon as I get back in. That drives her insane. Even though she doesn't have to sleep in it (I so don't get women!).
It's an unmade bed that she doesn't know about. And it drives her crazy!
Shouldn't Women Figure Out How To Market To Women?Shouldn't women market to women? Of course they should.
When I look at a marketing strategy the first thing I do is try and understand the market. I check out what influences the market. I immerse myself as much as possible into the target's culture. And that's usually okay.... except I look terrible in a dress so I have a lot of trouble with the immersion thing there.
If you are one of the market you are trying to target then you have a big, big advantage over a guy like me. A guy who isn't in sync with the target market.
Even though I have tons of marketing experience, don't discount your experience. After all, no one knows you better than you.

If You Have A Business Get A Blog
If You Have A Business Get A BlogMy # 1 marketing recommendation for most businesses these days would be to get a
blog on you web site. Here's why (courtesy of
Andrew Johnson of Web Publishing Blog who just posted this in a comment on
this blog below):
This is regarding an ad campaign for Audi:"...(the) blog component of the campaign was one half of one percent of the marketing spend and generated (ready for this?) 29% of the traffic to the Web site."

Just Be Nice ........... It Ain't That Hard (Even I Can Do It)
Just Be Nice ........... It Ain't That Hard (Even I Can Do It)Yesterday I dropped off what I called a "Tailored De-stress Pack" to some clients (a husband and wife team). I'd called in the day before to say hello and they was frantically busy.
Frazzled. Overwhelmed with busyness. Frantic. Hair-tearing out stage.
So I dropped back yesterday with 3 wrapped gifts. The De-stress Pack contained:
For both:
Bottle of
Jansz bubbly.
For her:A tub of
Tim Tam chocolate icecream (a combination of the best chocolate biscuits in the world and icecream - it doesn't get any better than that!)
For him:A new golf ball (he plays a lot of golf but hasn't played for 6 weeks).
Do Unto Others...Back in my old days when I was nursing the motto of the old and very traditional hospital I trained at was "
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Which was a cool way of saying "Be nice to people."
Not because there is anything in it for you, but because it's a hard, tough life out there and we all need a little boost sometimes.
Was It About Business?Do I expect more business from these clients because I dropped in the gift? Of course not. If a gift is given with that sort of expectation then it would take about 0.03 seconds for the client to see through it.
These clients have helped us grow our business over the years by using our services, recommending our services and acting as referees.
The least I can do is say "Hang in there" with a small token gift.

What To Look For When Buying A Computer
What To Look For When Buying A ComputerOn today's radio show on the
ABC I talked about what to look for when buying a computer. I'll cover the basics here - also do your own research (I'll provide a couple of good places to start below).
Laptop Vs DesktopThis one is really one of personal preference. Laptops aren't generally as powerful as Desktops, but (of course) they are far more portable.
ProcessorKnow as the CPU (
Central Processing Unit) the processor is the thing that does most of the work. The faster the CPU's clock the faster it can perform the instructions. The speed is measured in MHz (megahertz) or GHz (gigahertz).
MemoryHere I'm referring to RAM (that stands for
Random Access Memory). This is where computers put software programs and data that's currently being used (so if you open up 6 programs at once you are using lots of RAM). You need at least 256MB RAM these days. 512 MB of RAM is even better.
Hard DriveThis gives you the space to store program, files, etc. The hard drive is usually measured in GB (gigabytes). Importantly, the speed at which the disk rotates translates to how quickly the files can be accessed. Get at least a 5,400 rpm (that's what the cheaper systems have these days anyway).
To give you an idea of the way storage space needs increase:8 years ago I bought a
Dell computer. Top of the range, cost me an arm and a leg (I now list a little to the right!). I got the one with massive space - 12
GB. It was full within a few years.
Anthony's machine is the latest one I bought - it has 240
GB. We've used almost 60
GB in just a few months.
And in this day of huge video files, audio files, digital photos, etc the rest of that space will go quickly.
CachesThe cache is another memory part - this is the temporary storer of data. Get a 512 KB cache if you can.
Monitor SizeGet the biggest monitor you can afford. 17 inch is okay. 19 inch is better.
USB PortsUSB ports are those holes in your monitor/keyboard/computer where you can plug in external devices (cameras, video cameras,
iPods, printers, etc). Make sure your computer has at least 2.
Operating SystemThe operating system is the thing that runs your software programs, manages your printers/etc and generally takes care of your files.
An operating system (i.e.
Windows XP) come standard with most computers.
SoftwareThe software is the programs that you use on your computer - i.e Word and Excel. See if you can get the professional suite of software - i.e.
Microsoft Office (although there are
free alternatives).
Two Good Places To ResearchNet Guide - buy their magazine in Australia or visit their site.
CNET - visit for some greta info.

Here's How To Do It
Here's How To Do ItSeth Godin is the author of
"All Marketers Are Liars". Seth pushes the angle that marketers must tell stories about the products they are trying to sell.
In his book Seth says: "While your story will not be the whole truth, you don't have enough time to tell the whole truth - its core must be authentic. And you must live the story. "
Chelsea is the person who manages our media relationships.
Chelsea works for herself and we pay her a monthly retainer. Chelsea is fantastic. Employ Chelsea if you want a simply wonderful person doing a wonderful job with your public relations.
Chelsea Read "All Marketers Are Liars".Chelsea read
"All Marketers Are Liars" and enjoyed it immensely.
Mel and I just received an invitation from Chelsea. Here it is:

That's Chelsea taking action. And Chelsea implementing what she's learnt. And Chelsea telling (and creating) stories. I like her style!
Maybe I should get Chelsea and the photographer from the
earlier post together??

It's Not What's On The Wall Dummy
It's Not What's On The Wall Dummy!Anthony and I were recently in a clients place of business, which just happened to be an Art Gallery.
An artist was busily helping gallery staff put up his latest works (wildlife photography) which included a photo of a
tubular sea anemone and a close-up underwater shot of a whale.
We got talking with the artist when someone asked him how he got the shot of the sea anemone.
"It was in a tank," he said.
That was a bit disappointing.....I was hoping for a tale of a great escape from this creature of the deep.
"And what about the whale?" someone else asked.
"It's not where I shot them, it's what's on the wall that counts," he said.Wrong! With any marketing the story is critical. With such a subjective and emotional eliciting thing as artwork the story is often more important than what's on the wall.
You need to make a connection with your audience, your public, your buyer. That's often easier done by telling your story rather than showing them the final product.
People buy on emotion. Sure, your product might do it but I'll bet your story could do it better.

Real Estate Businesses Take A While To Get It
Real Estate Businesses Take A While To Get It
Web sites generate almost 33% of all leads for Real Estate agents here in Australia.
Weekly newspapers account for 14% of leads.
Metropolitan newspapers account for 4% of the leads.
Yet agents continue to spend upwards of $40,000 per year on newspaper advertising which is "completely inverse to where their listings are coming from" according to Stephen Sharry, CEO of franchise chain
Raine & Horne.
I don't know why that is - I'd guess because they don't understand the web, are scared of it, or just don't know where to start.
I proposed a blog for a local real estate agent a few months back. he's still thinking about it.
I think a personal blog would be a fantastic place for an agent to get a taste of the effectiveness and power of the web.

Finding the Right Experts
Finding the Right ExpertsI had a meeting last week with a lady who has been developing sites to generate Google Adsense income.
Her strategy hasn't worked because of a whole range of reasons - mainly because she's developing exceptionally poor sites with almost zero content.
She, like a fairly regular stream of people I meet, don't have the skills or knowledge to then move forward and right their wrongs to make their business a success.
Hard Place To BeAnd it's a hard place to be sitting here being asked to help. Because it's not that the person is beyond all help. It's just that we don't have the time (and it's not our core business) to take her by the hand and guide her through the process step by step.
A lot of the time we can help by referring people to the best resources we know of. You see, finding the 'right' experts - good and decent people who know what they are talking about - is often all people really need to get started in the right direction.
If It's Search Engine Optimization Then It's.....If it's search engine optimization that people need to learn then it's
Aaron Wall's SEO Book we recommend (this is our review).
If they need to know how to run Google Adwords then the guy to learn from is
Perry Marshall. And self education is often the best way to learn - at your own pace and being able to refer to others as you go.
You Can Make A Living OnlineYes, you can make a living online. But it's not easy. You need to know your market, your choice influences, etc.....just like any business. And that knowledge comes from experience, being in the industry, testing, etc...... just like in any business.
But I will say this - web businesses, whether selling product, information or being a publisher, are the best business models I have ever seen.
I've been in the industry for 10 years now and I know the industry. I know who's the right people to listen to and, importantly, who's not.
Good luck.

"I'd Rather Visit Hell Than Byron Bay"
"I'd Rather Visit Hell Than Byron Bay"That's what a TV and Radio personality here in Australia said after him and his son were
involved in a fight with 15 or so local youths at
Byron Bay. I mention Byron Bay because that's where Greg, Alister and I play tennis every second week, where we then go out and have a few beers.
Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia and is a beautiful little town by the sea. It relies very heavily on tourists for it's money.
Rex Hunt (the TV & Radio personality) was visiting last week for a friends wedding. Rex and his son (and Rex's wife and his son's girlfriend) were walking down the main street when they got into the fight. Rex and his son
copped a hiding by the sounds of things.Rex Speaks Out......And Tourists Start cancelingBeing a TV & Radio personality, Rex's fight has received a lot of coverage. Especially since Rex has spoken out about the attack - including the line "I'd Rather Visit Hell Than Byron Bay".
And what has happened is that a lot of people booked in for holidays now perceive the area as unsafe and have cancelled. Reports vary according to what media you read but the effect has apparently been quite significant.
Awareness & PerceptionThere are assaults in every town in the world. The vast, vast majority don't get reported let alone generate a lot of media coverage.
Is Byron Bay any less safe than anywhere else? I have no idea.
But the perception of many people now is that yes, it is unsafe.
And that perception comes about because people have read the story about Rex and his son.
You see, tourism is just another product. There's a perceived risk in buying any product. Many people in the market for a holiday will now perceive the risk of getting a relaxing holiday too high and therefore not buy a holiday to Byron Bay. Or cancel their booked one.
That's the impression. So that's the reality for many, many people.
Reduce The RiskWhat the
Byron Bay council will now need to do is remove/reduce that perceived level of risk. They can do that a number of ways:
- increase police patrols
- start a strong PR campaign regarding safety on the streets
- publish statistics on the issue that show Byron Bay in a favourable light
- have the mayor start a blog on the front of the council page (part of the PR)
- get in touch with Rex and try and minimise additional negative statements
Perception is reality. And a vocal and angry TV & Radio personality can damage a small town's tourism trade very significantly.

Take Your Chances When You Can
Take Your Chances When You CanI play tennis every Thursday against 2 friends - Alister and Greg (pictured left). We play a Round Robin - it's the first person to win 15 games.

Last Thursday they got the better of me and I had about 8 games when they both had 12. Then they both got to 13 games each.
We were the last people scheduled on the court and the Tennis Court manager had automatically set the lights to go off at 9.30 pm.
At 9.20 pm Greg and Alister had 14 games each. Then they were playing each other. Alister got to 30-15. Just 2 points away from victory (and $50 from Greg and I each!).
He Tossed The Ball Up.......He tossed the ball up to serve and at that precise moment everything went black. That meant 1 of 2 things.
1. I had shut my eyes
2. The timer at the tennis court controlling the lights was a bit dodgy
Bad luck for Alister - his $100 win had just been snatched away! The tennis court lights were off and staying off. Greg and I did a little jig (that no-one could see) and walked off the court very happy.
We ignored Alister's calls of "It's not too bad. We can play by noise......
Alister Was Leading By 6 GamesAlister was leading by 6 games at one stage. But he didn't take his chances. He didn't take any risks. He decided to play safe (he choked basically!).
If there is a business parallel here it is this: don't always play safe. There are times when you have to put yourself on the line and take the risk.
Business can be a risk. Minimise the risks as much as possible but don't be afraid to take the bold and daring step that could mean the difference between winning and losing.

People Lie!
People Lie!It's true.....people lie! It's been well documented that people tend to tell a few fibs when filling in surveys. The video below is 26 seconds of a speech I recently gave that mentions just that.
Have a good weekend.

What Limitations Are Holding You Back?
What Limitations Are Holding You Back? Most of us have some sort of limitation holding us back - it might be confidence, or money, or training, etc. But should they really?
I've just come from a meeting with a client who runs a successful art gallery. One of his main roles is to select the artwork for the gallery. It's a precise job requiring skill and a keen eye.
Which means that my client shouldn't be able to do it - he's colour blind and has trouble distinguishing 1 colour from the next.
Sometimes I guess the limitations holding us back are the ones inside our own head.

Why You Should Enter Competitions, Awards, Etc
Why You Should Enter Competitions, Awards, EtcI did a couple of speeches last week to 120 people at a business seminar. The speeches seemed to go well but now I think I may have sucked. You see, I gave people a page to visit for more information.

The page was full of resources (links, white papers, etc) related to my talks. At the top of the page was a request to complete a short survey to give me some feedback on how they thought I did. The incentive to do the survey was that you then went in the draw to win $100 worth of books from
Amazon.
The photo here is the names of the 3 people who went into the draw to win. Yep, only 3 people did the survey. Not many more people looked at the page.
Always enter competitions, enter your work/self for awards, etc.
You never know how many other people have entered - and you just might win $100 worth of books from
Amazon like Jenny did.

Clothes Maketh The Man
Clothes Maketh The ManAs this blog is about all things marketing I thought it might be a good day to talk about clothes. That's for a couple of reasons.
# 1: Here in Australia today there is a horse race called the
Melbourne Cup. It's a two mile (3,200 metres) race for the best stayers in the land.
The horse are handicapped according to how good they are so that, in theory anyway, they should all cross the line together. The best horse (Makybe Diva) has the top weight of 58 kgs along with English horse Vinnie Roe.
The 'worst' horse is Kamsky which carries just 48.5 kgs. By lugging the extra 9.5 kgs the handicapper hopes that
Makybe Diva and
Vinnie Roe will be pulled back to be as fast as the slower horses.
Anyway, I'm off to a Melbourne Cup luncheon where there will be much drinking and eating and where most people take some effort with their dress.
Because it is forecast to be about 28 degrees C here (82.4 F) I'll be going pretty casually dressed.
Here's what I'm wearing to lunch (from the bottom up!):
- Leather shoes recently re-soled
- Casual pinstrip slacks
- Michel Rouen shirt with cuffs and aqua blue cufflinks
- A hand stitched Anthony Squires classic navy blue sports jacket
Good luck if you're having a bet in today's big race. My tip: Leica Falcon.
# 2: I've just been reading one of my
favourite blogs by Thomas Mahon of
The English Cut.
Thomas talks about how to get the best suit for you at a low price and provides some expert tips. It's 2 lines down the bottom that interested me most:
"So choose wisely and I reckon you should look a regular James Bond. Keep dressing like that, and you’ll soon get a promotion and be able to enjoy more than just dinner on The Row."What Thomas is saying is true.
Clothes do maketh the man. Dress better than everyone else and people will treat you differently.
Don't believe me? Dress superbly for 1 month and see what a difference it makes.
