Why You Might Like To Be Top Of The Search Engines

Why You Might Like To Be Top Of The Search Engines(This post of from our latest newsletter edition.)
We're doing quite a bit of search engine work at the moment - that is, we're working on sites to help them achieve a top search engine ranking.
It's really easy to quantify the benefits of search engine work. Here's an example I discussed with a client a few days ago:
* A site is in a niche whose main product attracts 80,000 searches per month.
* 3% of the people who visit that web site buy the product.
* The product sells for $60.
If we get the # 1 position for that main search term here's what will happen.
- 33,600 visitors - 42% will click on the # 1 position
- 1,008 sales
- $60,480 sales per month
Which means that our client can look at the amount we've quoted him, look at our track record, look at the potential rewards and make an informed decision on the Risk/Benefit ratio.

I just wonder if you tell a client "You can make $xx,xxx per annum", would they become disillusioned if they didn't make that much? Perhaps the number 1 rating wasn't achieved, but for whatever reason, I would think a client will hear "You can make up to xxxxx" as "You WILL make xxxxx".
Can you shoot me your email address through - admin@tailored.com.au and I'll check why not and resolve.
Thanks and apologies for the inconvenience.

That'll be the first thing. If you can't see it in the spam folder, email admin@tailored.com.au with your email address, and Brendon will investigate for you.
Brendon, do you think that offering figures as solid as that might in some way imply a guarantee, or set an unreasonable expectation?
I sometimes do provide a guarantee - this is a really difficult area because no-one can say with absolute certainty - "We'll get you number 1."
(But many do.)
When I'm pretty confident (90%+) I'll guarantee a top 1 or 2 position for a certain keyword on Google (and no, not some never-ever searched for keyword).
I think sometimes we need to step up and be confident in waht we do (that can bite us in the behind of course, but it's not failure from lack of trying).
I have 1 client right now who we'rer struggling to get the expected rankings and sales for - it's driving me crazy, but we're devoting enough time and energy to it that we'll eventually crack it.
