I had so much fun with the first video, I decided to do another video and upload it to YouTube for the practice. This video is a bit longer at just over 9 minutes.

It discusses the very basics of search engine optimization (I did it all in 1 take – at the start I say something like “People say you get lots of visitors from the other search engines other than Google.” What I meant to add was “Comparatively speaking in terms of the amount of work required…..”).

How To Find The Best Words To Be Found For

As you might know, I have a web site for ugg boots here.

I also have a page on this site here talking about ugg boots.

The page on this site attracts a few (not many) visitors searching for ugg boots on Google.

Here are what search terms these people search for:

  • australian ugg boots 7
  • australian ugg 5
  • ugg boots australia 2
  • Australian uggs 1
  • ugg boots, Australia 1
  • ugg boot 1
  • ugg boots genuine 1

If you looked at that you’d think “Wow, most of the people find the ugg boots page on this site by searching for “australian ugg boots”, so let’s optimise the site for that and get the highest ranking possible.” (This site is currently # 9 for that the term “australian ugg boots” on Google.)

Now We Check Other Data

Next Step: review other tools.

A quick look at Aaron Wall’s (of SEOBook fame) keyword tool shows us this:

  • ugg boots – 362,278 searches last month
  • australian ugg boots – 1,306 searches done last month

And if we look at Google Trends, we can see the term “australian ugg boots” doesn’t even show as a blip on the comparison chart.

So that tells us if we achieved the same sort of rankings for the term “ugg boots” as we do for “australian ugg boots” we could expect to get x300 the number of visitors we current do.

(300 x 7 = 2,100 visitors per day.)

Next Step: Statistics Check

Next we visit the stats of www.brandboots.com and see this for the number of visitors this month from search engines for these terms:

  • ugg boots 1,429
  • discount ugg boots 430
  • discount uggs 37
  • ugg boots.com 24
  • baby uggs 23
  • ugg 21
  • baby ugg boots 21
  • ugg boot 17
  • genuine ugg boots 16
  • australian ugg boots 16

Whilst that’s not consistent with my x300 the number of visitors theory (the variables are in the rankings for the various terms), you can see it would be a lot more visitors if we achieved a higher ranking for the term “ugg boots” on Google.

The Reason We’re Achieving Those Numbers

The reason we’re achieving those numbers is because we’re ranked okay on Yahoo for “ugg boots” – # 6.

The Two Lessons Here

There are 2 lessons here:

1. You have to know what people are really searching for.

Whilst it looked, at first glance, like “australian ugg boots” was a popular term some pretty basic reviews soon dispelled that theory.

2. You have to know the best term to target.

Whilst a high ranking for “ugg boots” on Google would give me thousands more visitors, it’s a highly competitive term and very difficult to achieve. Perhaps I’d be better off trying to improve my Yahoo rank?? (No way! I’m after the big numbers that Google provides!)

P.S: If you have a web site I’d love a link over to Brandboots with the text “Ugg boots reviews” – please feel free to link to whatever page you’d like. Thanks!

I’m going after a Top 10 spot on Google! Wish me luck.

P.P.S: Update 11 am 29 November 2006 (Australian time) – we’re now # 18 on Google for Ugg boots.

Why I Didn’t Dress Proper Like

In the video below I’m wearing a shirt with the sleeves rolled up. No jacket. Hair a little messed. No make up on (I always prefer to be made up like a Clown at every opportunity).

A good question someone asked is “Shouldn’t you be portraying a very professional image – shouldn’t you be wearing a jacket at least?”

Good point. I think.

But I think it’s really important to be authentic and just do it. If we had of got the dress right and then the lighting then the make up then the script, etc – then you wouldn’t see the video for a week.

And the point was to do it quickly.

Action always beats analysis . Just do it. Measure and test. Then do it again.
Don’t be paralyzed by analysis.

Video On Your Site For FREE in 30 Minutes

Video sharing sites are all the rage now – we just did a quick test to see how long it would take to shoot a quick 30 seconds or so of video, edit it, upload to a site (YouTube) and have it on this site.

It took 30 minutes from start to finish. Here are the exact steps we took.

To help promote my kit I did a video preview of it for the publishers.

About 17 seconds in it sounds like I say “The Web Design Business Kit is a very expensive kit……”

Ooooops (it’s meant to be “extensive”).

But that is quite funny.

The video goes for 2 minutes 51 secs.
