I Don't Want Your $20,000
I Don't Want Your $20,000Last week I received an RFP from an organization looking to develop a large databased web site.
All good so far.
With a quick call I had an idea of their budget and had made contact with the lead person.
A review of their fairly extensive Brief found many issues we'd need to address or find out more about so that we could provide the best solution possible (essentially the brief had been written by people not expert in what they were talking about - some aspects didn't make sense for example).
I called our contact person only to be told she didn't have time to meet and to just quote on the RFP.
Red Flag City!
That's the biggest red flag (warning sign) right there.
I explained to the contact that we'd probably need 2-3 meetings to establish their exact needs and wants to enable the best solution at the best price.

"No, just quote on what I gave you."
Ummmmmmm, no. What she gave me didn't make any sense and an organization that doesn't see the need for clarification of a Brief like the one provided is going to be, in my humble opinion, a pain in the ass to work with.
Business Isn't About Making Every Sale
Business isn't about making every sale.
Just as importantly, it's about identifying early on in the process those clients that are going to drain your resources, drain your energy, cause you a financial loss AND then complain bitterly to everyone about what a crap job you've done.
Don't take every job.
Take only those jobs that you know are going to be profitable and don't be afraid to refuse prospects.
Cheers

Please help me on this one. I have a lead to create a new web site with online chat. This require a lot of work because the customer wants lot of custom features and high graphic flash and all.
The time given to implement is not realistic, the budget is not realistic.
Do you have a suggestion on how I can decline gracefully without making him angry giving me a bad reputation to his future contact? Will you even bother to make a proposal?
Thanks for the help.
