Search Engine Optimization - Video Tips For Beginners

I had so much fun with the first video, I decided to do another video and upload it to YouTube for the practice. This video is a bit longer at just over 9 minutes.

It discusses the very basics of search engine optimization (I did it all in 1 take - at the start I say something like "People say you get lots of visitors from the other search engines other than Google." What I meant to add was "Comparatively speaking in terms of the amount of work required.....").

How To Find The Best Words To Be Found For

How To Find The Best Words To Be Found For

As you might know, I have a web site for ugg boots here.

I also have a page on this site here talking about ugg boots.

The page on this site attracts a few (not many) visitors searching for ugg boots on Google.

Here are what search terms these people search for:
  • australian ugg boots 7
  • australian ugg 5
  • ugg boots australia 2
  • Australian uggs 1
  • ugg boots, Australia 1
  • ugg boot 1
  • ugg boots genuine 1
If you looked at that you'd think "Wow, most of the people find the ugg boots page on this site by searching for "australian ugg boots", so let's optimise the site for that and get the highest ranking possible." (This site is currently # 9 for that the term "australian ugg boots" on Google.)

Now We Check Other Data

Next Step: review other tools.

A quick look at Aaron Wall's (of SEOBook fame) keyword tool shows us this:

  • ugg boots - 362,278 searches last month
  • australian ugg boots - 1,306 searches done last month
And if we look at Google Trends, we can see the term "australian ugg boots" doesn't even show as a blip on the comparison chart.

So that tells us if we achieved the same sort of rankings for the term "ugg boots" as we do for "australian ugg boots" we could expect to get x300 the number of visitors we current do.

(300 x 7 = 2,100 visitors per day.)

Next Step: Statistics Check

Next we visit the stats of www.brandboots.com and see this for the number of visitors this month from search engines for these terms:
  • ugg boots 1,429
  • discount ugg boots 430
  • discount uggs 37
  • ugg boots.com 24
  • baby uggs 23
  • ugg 21
  • baby ugg boots 21
  • ugg boot 17
  • genuine ugg boots 16
  • australian ugg boots 16
Whilst that's not consistent with my x300 the number of visitors theory (the variables are in the rankings for the various terms), you can see it would be a lot more visitors if we achieved a higher ranking for the term "ugg boots" on Google.

The Reason We're Achieving Those Numbers

The reason we're achieving those numbers is because we're ranked okay on Yahoo for "ugg boots" - # 6.

The Two Lessons Here

There are 2 lessons here:

1. You have to know what people are really searching for.

Whilst it looked, at first glance, like "australian ugg boots" was a popular term some pretty basic reviews soon dispelled that theory.

2. You have to know the best term to target.

Whilst a high ranking for "ugg boots" on Google would give me thousands more visitors, it's a highly competitive term and very difficult to achieve. Perhaps I'd be better off trying to improve my Yahoo rank?? (No way! I'm after the big numbers that Google provides!)

Cheers

Brendon

P.S: If you have a web site I'd love a link over to Brandboots with the text "Ugg boots reviews" - please feel free to link to whatever page you'd like. Thanks!

I'm going after a Top 10 spot on Google! Wish me luck.

P.P.S: Update 11 am 29 November 2006 (Australian time) - we're now # 18 on Google for Ugg boots.

Why I Didn't Dress Proper Like

Why I Didn't Dress Proper Like

In the video below I'm wearing a shirt with the sleeves rolled up. No jacket. Hair a little messed. No make up on (I always prefer to be made up like a Clown at every opportunity).

A good question someone asked is "Shouldn't you be portraying a very professional image - shouldn't you be wearing a jacket at least?"

Good point. I think.

But I think it's really important to be authentic and just do it. If we had of got the dress right and then the lighting then the make up then the script, etc - then you wouldn't see the video for a week.

And the point was to do it quickly.

Action always beats analysis . Just do it. Measure and test. Then do it again.
Don't be paralyzed by analysis.

To help promote my kit I did a video preview of it for the publishers.

About 17 seconds in it sounds like I say "The Web Design Business Kit is a very expensive kit......"

Ooooops (it's meant to be "extensive").

But that is quite funny.

The video goes for 2 minutes 51 secs.

People Always Remember Me As.......

People Always Remember Me As.......
  • very loud
  • very confident
  • quirky
  • outrageous
  • different
As a friend told me once "People either love you or hate you...............they usually hate you!"

But they remember me.

And that's called marketing (it's better of course if you're remembered for something relevant to your business!).

What do you do to be remembered?

Brendon

P.S: I'm very aware of my own brand management now that I've written a book, have a podcast, have a newsletter, am the President of the local Scouts, etc. I feel like I have a responsibility to not be too outlandish so I don't negatively impact on others.

Plus I turned bloody 40 the other day (but as Jenny & Patty said, I'm still hot!!) and am maturing. :o)

P.P.S: My favourite book on personal branding is the brilliant "Be Your Own Brand" by David McNally & Karl D. Speak.

P.P.S: The photo below is of me in 1973 - with the note beside it saying "We all go fishing a lot once in a lifetime Brendon comes and catches biggest fish ever caught by a Sinclair. It was 1 1/2 bricks long. 1973"

Google Has An Incredible 78% Of The UK Search Market

Google Has An Incredible 78% Of The UK Search Market

According the Hitwise, Google powered 78% of UK internet searches in the four weeks to 21st October 2006, up 9% year on year.

78% of searches. That is why you need to focus your search resources on solid rankings within Google more than any other search engine.

Don't tell me I don't give you great info (I don't, it's from Hitwise, but you know what I mean!).

I Don't Want Your $20,000

I Don't Want Your $20,000

Last week I received an RFP from an organization looking to develop a large databased web site.

All good so far.

With a quick call I had an idea of their budget and had made contact with the lead person.

A review of their fairly extensive Brief found many issues we'd need to address or find out more about so that we could provide the best solution possible (essentially the brief had been written by people not expert in what they were talking about - some aspects didn't make sense for example).

I called our contact person only to be told she didn't have time to meet and to just quote on the RFP.

Red Flag City!

That's the biggest red flag (warning sign) right there.

I explained to the contact that we'd probably need 2-3 meetings to establish their exact needs and wants to enable the best solution at the best price.

"No, just quote on what I gave you."

Ummmmmmm, no. What she gave me didn't make any sense and an organization that doesn't see the need for clarification of a Brief like the one provided is going to be, in my humble opinion, a pain in the ass to work with.

Business Isn't About Making Every Sale

Business isn't about making every sale.

Just as importantly, it's about identifying early on in the process those clients that are going to drain your resources, drain your energy, cause you a financial loss AND then complain bitterly to everyone about what a crap job you've done.

Don't take every job.

Take only those jobs that you know are going to be profitable and don't be afraid to refuse prospects.

Christmas Time Is Boom Time For Online Sales

Christmas Time Is Boom Time For Online Sales

Heather Hopkins is the Director of Research at Hitwise UK and has an excellent blog talking all things Internet.

Being involved with ugg boots sales over the years, I still have some ugg boot interests and was interested to see Heather's stats on searches for ugg boots in the UK a few weeks back.

As I mentioned here a week or so ago, the searches/sales online of ugg boots absolutely boom prior to Christmas. You see, they make such a great gift that the sales go through the roof.

And being very cold in the UK & the US in December certainly helps.

What I find happens when you read a great blog like Heather's is that you become more aware of the importance of statistical analysis when managing web sites - and thus your decision making improves.

Check it out here - a terrific blog.

Most Popular Cameras On The Market

Most Popular Cameras On The Market

Flickr is an online photo sharing site that is hugely popular.

It's a great way to store, search, sort and share photos. Every photo that gets uploaded to the site automatically sends data about the camera that took it - that's an enormous amount of data, because there are millions and millions of images stored on Flickr.

Anyway, the guys at Flickr have collated the data from all these photos and found the most popular cameras used.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT wins- see the data here.

Hope that helps if you're thinking of springing for a new digital camera.

Cheers Big Ears.

Hit A Bump On The Road!

Hit A Bump On The Road!

Oh my goodness. Today I turn 40. That's a bump on the road.

Man, I can't believe it. Seems like just yesterday I was turning 18.

Had a nice day on Saturday - tennis with 7 mates where we had a doubles championship - I lost. Then we all went to the horse races - I lost again. Then back to my place where we had a dinner for 16 with all the food and wine from Tasmania - the place I grew up.

That's me (L) with friends Steve & Leanne at home for dinner

Sunday was out for breakfast, another tennis game (and another loss!), then home for lunch and a few beers. Then that night there was a surprise cocktail party with another 35 people.

Yesterday I spent recovering and falling asleep here at work at my desk until I figured out that I may as well fall asleep at home.

And today - on my actual birthday - I thought I'd potter along here at work for a few hours.

So there it is. I'm now hitting middle age. At least now I can't die young I guess!

Cheers

Brendon

P.S: And thanks to Jenny who commented in this post - as a man hits 40 his fragile male ego needs a boost ..... and the beautiful, wonderful and just plain nice Jenny (I have no idea who you are Jenny!) said "Happy birthday you stud you!"

P.P.S: I received an email from a mate this morning:

"Good morning Brendon

I believe you have something of mine!

Regards

Father Time"

Like.com - The Best Idea For A Search Engine I've Ever Seen

Like.com - The Best Idea For A Search Engine I've Ever Seen

I just wrote about Like.com is the SitePoint Tribune and have received a lot of feedback from people saying "Wow, what a great idea."

Like.com is a shopping search engine - you either search for what you're after (or choose a celebrity and see what they're wearing) and do a search on products that look like what you've seen.

So if your favourite celebrity is wearing a great pair of shoes, you do a search for shoes like that and have lots of great options thyat look the same (but are probably 1/2 the price).

Check it out - www.like.com.

It's Always About Helping People Solve Problems

It's Always About Helping People Solve Problems

Seth Godin is a guy whose blog I read regularly. Seth just did a post that talks about a tyre business helping someone out who had a flat tyre.

I wrote an article a few years ago about the same thing - The Perfect Salesman.

Doing business is always about the exact same thing as helping someone in trouble.

All we ever do is find the best solutions for people's web or marketing troubles. I never see it as selling anybody anything.

I've been a bit distracted this week and really haven't put as much on this site as I'd like.

I have a few mates getting together tomorrow - 9 am is the tennis championship between 8 of us, midday is at the horse races and 7 pm is my place for a 16 person dinner party.

You see, this old man is turning 40 on Tuesday and we're just about to start the party.

Thanks for reading the blog, I'll have a beer for you on the weekend.

How Child Care Software Would Have made Me Millions!

How Child Care Software Would Have Made Me Millions!

Back in the late 1980's I almost purchased a Kindergarten with a view to turning it into a child care facility. If the sort of child care software that is about now was available then I would have gone ahead with the purchase.

Child care centres are now very profitable.

You see, because I was inexperienced with child care, software that runs the numbers and generally makes management easier would have been just the thing to make a difference.

And then there was the time I knocked back buying shares that then went from $2 to $7 in the course of 3 months - I could have retired on that one!

And then there was that other time that I kept an investment property for 8 years, sold it at a loss just to see the property boom hit about 3 days after I sold. D'oh!

Then there was the time........you get the drift.

With the tools available today, tools like child care management software for child care business, it is much easier to identify and act on business ideas.

And these tools probably make it easier to be successful too. Like Seth Godin says, last year was the time to act. Next best time is right now.

See How Easy It Is To Have A Much Better Site

See How Easy It Is To Have A Much Better Site

A regular reader (Matt from a insolvency accountants firm) sent me an email mentioning that the search facility on this site was pretty crappy and it might be nice to fix. It's been one of those things we've always been meaning to get around to, but the prod yesterday was enough.

Using Adsense for Search it took us about 10 minutes to get the new search working. Here's what search results look like now:

One worry I had was that people might leave the site by clicking on an ad rather than our results. But then I figure if those results look like more help then that's fine.

One thing we have to do is convert archives of blog posts to articles - that was we can have a more descriptive and useful title tag and make searching far easier.

Thanks to Matt for the prod.

How To Win Great Prizes

How To Win Great Prizes

One of the hats I wear is as the President of the Palm Beach Scouts. The Committee are in charge of fundraising amongst other things and we've had a terrific year.

My wife Mel heads up the Fundraising Committee and held a Trivia Night on Saturday night. We've had 2 this year and I've been the MC both times.

Both times we've raised close on $1,000 per night. Funds that are very gratefully received for these sort of activities.

Anyway, there are raffles on the night with some nice prizes.

1st Trivia Night - My son won the major prize, another son the 2nd prize.
2nd Trivia Night (last Saturday) - My son won the major prize, my wife won the 2nd prize and my other son won the 4th prize.

I feel so guilty when they win because I figure it's other people's night - but then my kids (and wife for that matter) are so excited to win that I can't really say "Give it back - we'll redraw."

I've never been a believer in Karma either. Not sure what it is. But as the guy who announces the winner's names I'd like to categorically deny I cheated!

So they key to winning prizes - donate time to your local Scouts or any other community organisation that might need a hand. Trust me - it works!

Make Your Move For Christmas

Make Your Move For Christmas

Okay, Christmas is only 42 days away. It's time, if you haven't already, to implement your Christmas marketing strategy.

You might be selling ugg boots - which means the next 30 days is really your only window of opportunity for the year. See below for the trend history from Google Trends for ugg boots searches in Australia.

Other people, like birthday gift ideas specialist Spratti, have flatter trend lines (below). As you can see, if Spratti targets 'gift ideas' he's much better off than targeting 'birthday gifts'.

Sure, there is a bit of a peak each Christmas, but overall it's a flatter line.

If your product offering is largely Christmas driven - likes perfume, books and games - now is the time to really crank up your marketing efforts.

Making Money In A Drought

Making Money In A Drought

Here in Australia we're in the grip of a very severe drought.

Part of the response has been a joint effort by local councils and governments to encourage home owners to install water tanks (and not rely upon town water being pumped from dams).

To this end the council and government provide significant rebates should you buy and install a water tank - it's enough to pay for the entire operation in many cases (and very close to it in many other situations).

Yesterday we received a brilliant brochure from My Backyard - a local outdoor living store. The headline of the brochure was:

FREE
RAINWATER TANKS

with Brisbane City Council & State Government Rebates
Order now and win a spa for summer!

A brilliant heading. It offers the prospect a free tank AND provides an incentive to get it now.

The brochure then goes on to detail their various products and explains how the rebate system works.

That's excellent marketing - a simple headline that grabs the attention and makes an irresistible offer. Perfect.

Do you effectively use copywriting in your business literature? Or is it full of corporate-speak that satisfies the lawyers and bores the prospect?

The Reason I Won't Buy MySpace Or YouTube

The Reason I Won't Buy MySpace Or YouTube

Well, 2 reasons actually.
  1. I don't have a spare billion $ or more in my back pocket.

  2. I figure that if sites like this can grow to that size in a couple of year (bearing in mind they have a younger demographic), they could go down just as quick. And (very importantly) a competitor could become even cooler and have the same sort of growth.

Would you buy them?

Please Get A Blog - I'm Begging You

Please Get A Blog - I'm Begging You

I tell anyone who will listen that their business should have a blog (definition here).

From Naked Conversations:

"Mahon has been coming to New York for years, to serve a smattering of American clientele.

The economics are such that if he sells two suits each time, it pays for the trip. If he sells three, he eats and gets to pay rent again back on Savile Row.

A five-suit trip for him has traditionally been a Bonanza.

When Mahon was in New York, in December 2004, he sold only two suits.

This time, he sold 20 suits and eight sport coats, better by far than he had done in any full year ever.

Where did the new business coming from?

"One hundred percent of this increase has come from blogs. There is absolutely no doubt about it, says McLeod."

Here's the full article.

Thomas Mahon - English Cut

They're talking about a blog I often used as a great example of an effective blog - English Cut.

Your business - almost without exception - can benefit from a blog. Check out English Cut as a fine example of a great and effective blog.

Unique Birthday Gift Ideas & More

Unique Birthday Gift Ideas & More

Earlier in the year I wrote about the terrific caricature (left) my mate Leanne received from her partner Steve.

The brilliant Spratti - Phil Spratt, one of the best caricaturists around - comes up with these unique birthday gift ideas that really hit the mark.

A few weeks back I was trying to think of a gift for a good friend of mine who was turning 40. A call to Phil, photos emailed and on Friday morning I was picking up the best unique birthday present I'd ever given.

Phil not only does these wonderful caricatures, but he also adds in elements that the person is interested in - my mate Dave (right) loves his camping, his beer (Crown Lager) and has a crane business.

But Not Just Unique Birthday Gifts

But Phil doesn't just provide these great birthday gifts. He's smarter than that.

You see, Phil understands that a big part of his business is word of mouth and getting his name out there.

To this end, Phil includes in with the caricature a couple of fridge magnets (below left), business cards (below middle) and a "Thank You letter" (below right), which even has some ideas on how best to frame the work.

And then Phil follows up with an email to say he hopes my friend likes the gift.

Simple stuff all that. And very effective at getting Phil's stuff out there, noticed and commented on.

He makes it as easy as possible to stay top of mind (if you click on the caricatures above you'll notice Phil signs them and then has a link over to his web site. He's smart that Phil!).

But all of the above wouldn't be great without being backed up by a terrific product - and Phil more than delivers on that. It was without question the best birthday gift I have given.

Check out Phil's work if your looking for a special birthday, retirement, corporate gift or for any other special occasion.

Cheers

Paying money to bloody Google slightly better than paying money to SEO experts

Paying money to Google slightly better than paying money to SEO experts

In this post below, I mentioned that the sales conversion rates of Pay Per Click advertising is slightly higher than sales conversion rates of organic (free) search engine rankings.

I mentioned that I couldn't think of a decent headline for the post.

So my online mate, Anthony Dever, has suggested the above - much better.

But I'd suggest that it's not quite right - after all, paying money to an SEO expert will get you ongoing free visitors to a range of search terms and be, in my humble opinion, much better long term value (but your online marketing needs to include both Pay Per Click and search engine optimization).

P.S: Thanks Anthony!

Google Overtaking UK's TV Channels In Advertising Revenue

Google Overtaking UK's TV Channels In Advertising Revenue

Recently, Google reported global third quarter profits totaling to $733 million.

The figure is a 92% boost from the $381 million reported at the same period last year.

Overall Google's third quarter revenues increased by 70% from $2.7 billion a year ago.

Google is now, according to various sources, close to overtaking the UK's top commercial TV channels for total advertising revenue!

I may have mentioned this before (!) - online advertising works and it works well and it is very easily accountable.

Pay Per Click Edges Out Organic Listings In Conversion Race

Pay Per Click Edges Out Organic Listings In Conversion Race

My goodness, that's a bloody dull heading..........just can't think of anything sexier at the minute. Maybe I should use the word 'bloody' in the first line of copy to try and spice things us?? :o)

Anyhooooo.....

Clickz have just written an article looking at a WebSideStory summary comparing the conversion rates (sales made for visitors to a web site) of paid search (such as Pay Per Click programs like Google AdWords) and organic listings (that's when your web site appears in the 'normal' free listings when someone searches).

Paid search conversion rate: 3.4%
Organic search conversion rate: 3.1%

I'd guess that Pay Per Click has a slight edge because the heading and ad copy is completely controlled by the web site owner - and organic searches sometimes mean visiting pages that aren't the best at converting to sales.

My Tip: Do both. Have a budget for Pay Per Click and have a budget for organic search engine optimization.

Cheers

The How-To Of High Search Engine Rankings

The How-To Of High Search Engine Rankings

I've just checked out a web site I've had for a few years in search engines and was surprised to find that it ranks high (top 5 in MSN, # 9-13 in Yahoo) - it's an ugg boots web site - for a pretty competitive keyword (200,000 searches per month done on ugg boots).

I haven't worked on this site for well over a year, so was surprised at the high rankings.

What I'll do now is try and identify the reason it ranks so well (will be the age of the domain and the URL). Once I know what has worked I'll apply that to our knowledge-base of info to use on sites we work on.

Because with search engine rankings, like life, it's the little things that matter.

As An Example.....................

As an example, I had a company contact me last week about some 'urgent' search engine optimization they required. The client identified 7 (I think) key phrases they'd like to be found for.

I gave my proposal. At the same time I tested a few things to see how hard it would be to get a top ranking for these phrases - I did this with a test page.

# 1 In Google In 60 Hours

60 hours later my test page was # 1 in Google for the main phrase they wanted to be found for (we know what we're doing).

That was Monday. I told the client. They haven't said "Yes" to my proposal yet (it was cheap!).

Not sure why they haven't said "Yes"? Can you beat # 1?! :o)

More search engine optimization information: My favourite search engine optimization book (Follow this book and you'll have search engine success).

And here's my video review of the same search engine rankings book:

The Secret To Finding The Right Term To Rank For

The Secret To Finding The Right Term To Rank For

The secret of great search engine rankings is finding the right key word/phrase to be found on. That is, is it better to be found for "ipod deals" on a search rather than "mp3 players"?

There is obviously a much stronger commercial intention to buy with the 1st phrase than the 2nd - but there are:
  • 4,000 searches done for "ipod deals" per month and
  • 1.3 million searches done for "mp3 players"
Wordze is a new keyword research tool that has just launched - take the tour here - to help you find relevant data like the above.

I'm not sure why I've received notification of the launch - I think the service may have had some credibility to me when it was in development after being recommended by an expert friend, and I signed up to be notified.

But the introduction email I got sent (slightly edited for brevity below) lets them down a little.

=====================

Dear Brendon,

Per your request we are letting you know that Wordze.com has opened.

As you have requested to be notified when we opened we are giving you a discount of over 35% of the current market value for our keyword research service.

Please take a minute to browse our tour page at http://www.wordze.com/tour.php to see some of the tools that our service offers.

Thanks for your time,
The Wordze.com Team

There Is A Good Reason To Check Wordze Out ......... I Just Can't Remember What It Is

You see, I signed up for notification months ago and now can't remember what was the point of difference that gave this service more credibility than numerous other keyword research services out there.

If the developer had of used his name in the email it would have been much more personal and much more valuable and much more likely to result in a sale.

Anyhoooooo, I think it will be a good service (worth checking out but I can't remember why!).

Cheers

Brendon

Yahoo's Site Explorer A Useful Tool

Yahoo's Site Explorer A Useful Tool

Yahoo's Site Explorer was launched in beta a couple of months ago and is a useful tool for numerous reviews for those managing web sites - check it out at

And here's the blog.

How Much To Increase Search Engine Rankings

Someone asked me last week to increase a site's search engine ranking for a one off fee of $500. It ain't gonna happen.

It takes us a minimum of 2 hours to review a site and identify the key issues to improve its rankings, and then you can add the cost of getting links to a site (using a variety of methods).

The absolute minimum for getting links to a site is $15 per link (it takes 15 minutes on average to get one link.......and I haven't even touched on paid links, directory listings (that cost), etc).

It can be expensive getting links to a site, but just the opposite of this example, it can be incredibly cost effective and valuable.

Cheers

Brendon
