"How Long Before My Site Ranks High?"

The most common question I get about search engine optimization is "How long before my site ranks high?"

It's a good question because we all want results.

The answer is this:

• if your web site has been around for years and we're trying to get a high search engine ranking on a word that gets searched for a fair bit (i.e. about 10,000 per month) - roughly 7 days before we see movement and another 3-6 weeks before we get some terrific gains
  
  
• if your web site is fairly new and we're trying to get a high search engine ranking for that same term - allow 6-8 weeks
  
  
• If your site is new and you want a high ranking for a term that gets 200,000 searches a month - that will take 12+ weeks (probably longer)

The above isn't set in stone - we've had faster and longer timeframes, but the above is a solid guide.
