Idiot

Who says the US is a litigation happy place?

Man loses $54 million pants case.

He was suing because the dry cleaner lost his pants. And they had a 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' sign up.

Here are some quotes from the ABC News report:

"On the witness stand, Pearson broke down in tears and had to take a break from his testimony because he became too emotional while questioning himself about his experience with the missing trousers."

"Never before in recorded history have a group of defendants engaged in such misleading and unfair business practice," said Pearson.
  • How can this even get to waste the court's time?
  • Surely there must be some penalty for even thinking about bringing this case up?
Cheers

There kind of was a penalty.

See article. The plaintiff, Pearson, was denied. He was ordered to pay court costs for the defendant (the laundry service). Its only about $1000, but still.

This story is made all the more funny by the fact that Pearson is actually a judge and a lawyer himself. The pants he lost were supposed to have cost him about $1,000.

Interesting is this:
"Over the course of the litigation, the Chungs said they made three settlement offers - $3,000, then $4,600, then $12,000 - all rejected."

He could have accepted a $12,000 offer. Not bad. That'd replace my whole wardrobe!

I'm amazed that the dry-cleaning offered this much money. Land of litigation indeed!

Judge should have ordered that Pearson is no longer entitled to wear pants at all. Suitable outcome for such a silly suit. (see what I did there? Heh heh...)
At least he lost, imagine if he won!

Pearson may also be trying to prove how stupid the legal system is over some things.
Thanks, (I think) for pointing this out, Brendon. It's one of the major reasons I, a native-born American, choose to live 8,000 miles from the US. I don't have to listen to this sort of drivel masquerading as news on the US edition of CNN. I'd rather watch cricket scores on CNN International World Sports than watch the "news" from my own country.

An interesting factoid: Japan, roughly the size of California, has a population well over three times that of California ... but California has more attorneys than all of Japan. And there are 49 other US states full of lawyers as well.

What does this mean? If I go any further I'll get sued, so the reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions.
