How To Stop People Watching Video On Your Site

I just went to watch some online video on a guy's site. This is what I got instead:

If you don't want people to watch your video online then this is an excellent way to stop them. Good work!

This example merits one of those "big words" we should refrain from using often ... egregious. But just because this site made a really bad example doesn't mean the web isn't full of a lot more extremely clumsy video download interfaces. I very seldom click on anyone's video download simply because I never know what issues will show up ... and what "hoops" the web designer will force me through. Here's about $10,000USD worth of consulting advice I'll give away to all the "we know best" geeks out there:
1. Don't query about what viewer they are using. That's their business, not yours. Use a standard format or use multiple links for three or four of the major viewers. Save you time, enhances the viewers experience.
2. Don't query about speed. Start the D/L immediately at a dial-up file size/resolution and let the media be it's own tester. In only a few seconds you can measure what has been D/L's and if the customer has a fast link just shift to the high resolution file.
3. Provide a download link for the media that doesn't open a viewer so the client can D/L in the background and view it later. Why be so afraid the client might have a copy of the video independent of your site? If you have your contact/marketing info on the vid, doesn't the "free copy" provide a potential viral marketing piece that will circulate independently and draw more visitors/sales?

Stop making it hard for the customer!
Uhg what they're using is so 90's... :)
