Loving Kym's Work - 1 Simple Line To Increase His Likeability

Yesterday I mentioned a story about likeability and how doing nice things for others naturally increases your likeability.

Here's a likeable chap on the right.

Today I received an email from Kym who has a leading Byron Bay web design business.

Kym's One Easy & Likeable Line

Kym has snaffled a prospect who approached us a few months back for some work and for whom we set up hosting.

In the email Kym asked for the hosting details to be changed and finished with the line:

"P.S Big fan of your Sitepoint newsletter and kit!"

Ooooh, that is smooth! (I write the SitePoint Tribune that goes to 140,000 subscribers and I wrote The Web Design Business Kit.)

With 1 line Kym has eased the pain of us missing out on a client and made it much more likely I'll shoot him through the info he needs quickly and easily.

Easy stuff.

That's pretty funny and ironic, you are putting yourself out of business through the success of your Web Design Kit.

And Kym works in Byron, I'd still hate him.
Hi Brendan, thanks for the post. Got your email in the middle of a phone call with a client, he was asking why i was laughing... :)

Have to admit i dont like sending emails to other web companies after working out they probably put work in initially, but then again it happens to us also, and business is business.

And David well yes Byron is a great spot, but not exactly known for professional services so theres definitely pros and cons to our location. We've worked our asses off for nearly 8 years now to build our business, and still working our asses off. Lucky that i still love what i do but sometimes weeks pass in between going to the beach.
... working hard like everyone else.

Thanks again Brendan for your interesting post, you are an inspiration to a lot of us id say!

Look forward to meeting you one day, and perhaps collaborating on something in the future!

Virtual Gold Coast maybe?

Howdy Kym

One of the things that always annoys me is when we ask (nicely) for a web development company to change name servers/shoot the client through their domain details, etc because the client has changed to us and they obstruct the process.

I'd say this happens in 90% of cases where they burn the bridges with the client and annoy us just because we're the ones that have picked up the previously unhappy client.

We all lose clients - sometimes the fit just doesn't work/sometimes they just don't like your personality/sometimes they see a slight where none was intended.

Just accept it and move on I reckon. I've got more important things to worry about than a client or prospect who decided they'd be better served elsewhere.

I figure we didn't do something right in that case - so it's our issue, not theirs.

Kym, I think I've driven past your old offices a few times (just up from the tennis courts??) - have you recently moved from there (or am I thinking of someone else?).

Cheers.
There's a good object lesson here for those who care to absorb it.

And David? Life is too short for either cheap beer or hate. Business is business.

A few years back I worked for a small company who had a fat contract to provided hardware and software to the US government. Our hardware supplier was having a run of bad luck and made us look bad with some sub-standard product they shipped. I wanted to "go ballistic" ... they were wrong and they needed to be taught a lesson, etc.

The company owner reigned me in and explained all businesses had their ups and downs and we needed to ride it out, giving the supplier time to work through their issues. I couldn't believe this "spineless" response and left the company not long after, partially because of this (to my mind) horrid decision.

A year later the "horrid" supplier bought the company I had been working for and everyone got a big raise, stock, super benefits and the former owner netted about $2.5 million US for his work in founding the place.

There's no room for hate and bad feelings in these kind of things ... just work it through.
Dave my comment was a tongue in cheek attempt at humour and not meant in way to be offensive.

Byron Bay is one of the most famous beaches in Australia and a very popular destination for tourists.

Beach shacks (literally crappy old 50's bungalows) sell for upwards of 5 million A$ in some parts.

Kym is living and working in what some would call paradise.

Bags the 6 of 9 spot in the collective. ; )
