Win The Web Design Business Kit

The Web Design Business Kit is the kit I wrote 4 years ago for web developers looking for some help in building their web development business.

The kit sells for $247, has had more sales than you can poke a very large stick at and has exceeded all expectations (my Grade 1 teacher gave me a 'C' in English!).

I'm terribly proud of it.

Anyhow, the publisher sent me 3 kits last week when we launched version 2.o of the kit and I thought it would be good/nice to give 1 away to a reader who wants one.

About The Kit

Through case studies and personal studies, you’ll learn:

* How to sell yourself
* What should you charge?
* How to keep clients for life
* How to manage budgets
* How to hire and fire employees

Plus you’ll receive a binder with 73 actual documents Brendon uses in his day-to-day business including:

* Business plans
* Proposals
* Invoices
* Surveys
* Entire Direct Mail Campaigns

How To Win The Web Design Business Kit

Winning the kit is simple.

Just comment on this blog post with the best thing you've done to either get a new client or keep a client happy. We'll select a comment and that person wins the kit.

And no, we don't include sleeping with the client as an appropriate strategy for getting or keeping the client!

Entries close at 2 pm on October 1, 2007 Australian Eastern Standard Time (that's midnight on September 30 New York time).

I'll be the judge and I'll be influenced by Mel and Anthony (but not bribes). We might even just stick the names of people who comment in a hat.

Let the commenting begin..... and good luck.

Cheers

Brendon

As I am just starting out with my own business, the one thing right now that has been working the most has been word of mouth referrals from folks I've done work for. I tend to be a very friendly individual so when we talk, its like we've known each other for years.

At the same time I'm also very passionate about web design and try to infuse them with my own infectiousness. If I can get them excited about their own site selling them on my making their website for them is easy.

My boss at my day job had a friend with a successful business who needed some site work done and hooked Dave and I up. Dave really liked what I did an in turn told a friend who needed a site for their Non-profit agency.

She loved what I did in turn told a friend of hers who was a hospital web master that needed some training, and some consulting on web standards.

This in turn led me two other friends of hers with non-profits who needed website tune ups.

I realize that this model does indeed have its limitations and those may be closer on the horizon than I'd like to admit.

What I need to continue to be successful is all the information contained in the Web Design Business Kit! Word of mouth is good, but it only goes so far.
Before I start, I would just like to say that when I was starting out a couple of years back, I purchased Brendon's Web Design Business Kit and I must say it was a fabulous resource that helped and inspired me through my first year of business [how about flattery Brendon? :)]

Probably one of the strangest things I ever did that resulted in a client coming on board was actually refer him to one of my competitors. At the time, he was price sensitive and I could/would not dilute my value proposition, so I pointed him in the direction of another company. About six months later, the same client came knocking on my door again, having had a "more affordable" piece of work done, which didn't meet his expectations. Needless to say, we took on and completed the project and almost 2 years down the line we continue to work with this client (who is now a very dear friend) on various continuous improvement projects and have had 2 quality referals to boot.
Well I purchased the first edition and loved I've taken a "long" time to get around to implementing it but finally I'm starting to do that.

One of the things Brandon mentions in the book is telling everybody you know what you do, and being able to tell them in a few sentences what you're about. Well... Now I've been a programmer for years, but only recently did I start referring to myself as a "Web Developer" when I talk with people. I learned how to explain that in a few sentences and low and behold!

I was at a church men's meeting the other night when we were asked to introduce ourselves and state what we did. No less than 3 people came up and asked me what all I did. One is now a client.

Thanks Brandon!
I manufacture jewelery that is mostly sold as an Australian souvenir in galleries and craft shops. I have a website where I have been trying to encourage overseas retail sales. I have discovered that to get overseas people to find my website I need visibility where they are. I have been using Flickr and posting pictures of my work and joined photo interest groups that are to do with jewelery, fashion, colour and animals (my designs are mostly animals). Flickr is a social network thing that means that anytime i update a new picture others, my contacts, see it. This has meant that I have been having interaction with potential customers from OS and I just got an order from Sweden!
Hi Mr Brendon,

Fist of all i wish to Congratulate you for launching the new improved 2.0 version of the famous Web Design Business Kit.

The free chapters available for download at sitepoint.com gives a lot of information for beginners in web design business.

However, people like me from India, it is a dream to read your book, because it costs around Rs.10,000+.

But you are giving a lot of information through this blog which are very usefull for me.

I have some requests to you.

1. Why not you release a low cost ebook/pdf version of Web Design Business Kit.(like the seobook.com etc..)

2.Most of your blog and seminars are about search engine optimization(seo), web marketing and affiliate money making. Then why not you author another book on online marketing and money making.((practical way as your web kit,and of course I recommend an ebook.)

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks
Why don't you put your prices up - that way buying the regardless of how many rupees it costs? It's been a while since I read v1.0 of the book, but I'm pretty sure that tip is in there somewhere.
Excuse the bad grammar - what i was trying to say was if you charge more, you will have more money to afford a book like this. Maybe there is a untapped 2nd hand market in india of old v1.0 stock?
During the humble beginnings of my web design company (which I am still smack in the middle of), one marketing strategy I use is display advertising in a community newspaper.

Most clients find me through this paper, including Jeff Digangi. After several meetings and contract revisions, Jeff and I built a wonderful rapport and he ultimately took a chance on me and became my biggest client to date.

I must admit, he was sold more on my enthusiasm and personality than on my current portfolio and I couldn't be more thankful. Knowing I could exceed his expectations if given the chance, I could only think of one way to say thanks -- I altered the display ad in the newspaper to properly express my gratitude.

See Ad http://www.lesdesign.com/fx/4625x3ad-JD.jpg

Ad reads:

Hey, Jeff Digangi!
Thanks for choosing us to build
your new website.

[Say Hello To Rhonda For Us.]

company info...
Most of the time I go out of my way to create a website. Usually the clients likes it so much it refers a friend. I recently moved to launch in a new location after being let go from my few time job. While in the city I was in i averaged 2 websites a month and did no advertising due to client referral.
Hello!

I'm Mauro Casas, a 16-year-old boy who started designing at 9.

Since then, I tried to play a lot with colours and shapes, always trying to make them look beatiful and eye-catching.

Frontpage gave me the chance to make some basic layouts, then I learned Photoshop and met Dreamweaver. Great friends!

I started working as a freelance at 14, posting my services in gaming forums, till one day, a client contacted me!

I live in Argentina, so we didn't had the chance to met and talk, so we chated.

We chated a lot, and I asked him to pay in advance! Wow! I was so happy, my first 20 bucks with web design, I worked a lot on that design and I'm very proud of it.

personales.com/argentina/riogallegos/ElderRO/

That's my first site.

I love it.

This book has to be awesome, the reviews and comments are more than great. I dream to get this, with my financial situation I can't even afford a cheatsheet.

Well, my history continues when my dad gave me money and I didn't know what to do with it. I went for a walk downtown and found a bookstore, I saw it! PHP book!. Bam! bought it and run to my house, into my room and didn't sleep trying to learn, and I did.

I created my first app, a calculator, I was so proud of it.

I learned all that at 15. Now I'm 16 and I'm ecstatic to learn Ruby on Rails.. And I'd love to have this Kit..

Thanks for the chance!
mauro.
