The Worst Thing About SitePoint Contests
A couple of people have asked me for the downside of a SitePoint contest for getting a web site designed - that's easy.I'm running a contest there at the moment and am getting some brilliant designs.
The worst bit about it is rejecting great designs and feeling guilty because these guys and gals have put so much effort in.
Cheers
Brendon
P.S: The biggest hassle I've had with a contest was where someone used a copyrighted image in the design and the owner came after us for payment for use of the image. That was a pain.

Can you imagine that scenario? What do you think the builders would say if you suggested that to them? Why then is it considered acceptable to apply this to the design industry?
Design contests de-value the industry and flood it with poor quality rubbish.
They're bad for business also. This article sums it up - http://www.no-spec.com/articles/design-contests/.
I should point out that I did once win a one-off design contest, but the odds (and these contests are a gamble) were very much stacked in my favour when I entered (or so I believed). I am not, and never have been a fan of these en masse competitions however.
I personally would only use a builder that I knew or came highly recommended by friends or family.
Plus in all honestly that is what the home industry has came to. Think about all the cookie cutter neighborhoods being built. You get to pick from about 3 to 4 different styles of homes from the various builders.
So basically you can choose from 20 different styles and settle on the one that suits you best.
