Why Headlines Matter - Title Changed
I just changed the title tag of this site to
"Web and Marketing Tips To Make You Money."The title tag used to be "Tailored Info - Web & Marketing Info."
What this does is changes the feed title this site displays for all those people who read this blog through
RSS feeds.

I was just looking through my
Bloglines feeds (where I check updated blogs I read) and saw "Web and Marketing Tips To Make You Money" - I clicked on it before I even realised it was my site.
The Title Took My FancyI clicked on it because the title took my fancy.
What do you think? Better title tag?
If you're reading this through a feed did you notice the change?
You see,
words matter.
Headlines have to grab our attention otherwise our fantastic offer, whatever that may be, won't even be seen.
Which headline would you click on to read more?
Gold Coast Web Design
or
The Secret Of A Million $ Web Site
Words matter online.

Us Tech Types....We're Smart!
Not wanting to
point the finger at anyone or
perpetuate stereotypes, but I know a person who was trying to listen to some audio on this site.
This web professional spends 10 hours a day in front of a computer and is highly respected as one of
Belfast's best web designers.
He sent me this: "It's all complete silence to me.....perhaps it's something my end?"
He finally heard it an hour later.....when he turned his speakers on.
"I can't hear the sound for some reason."
=================================
Another web guy, who
I won't name, in our office also spends a lot of time on the computer.
The phone rang here today.
He answered it.......by picking up his mouse, placing it against his ear and saying "Morning, Tailored Consulting,
xxxxxx speaking."
Idiot.

1 Web Site Or 10?
I was emailing with a client yesterday who mentioned numerous domain names she was registering.

I asked her why she was registering all of these domains.
Turns out that a web tutor told her that
"having multiple domain names all going to the same web-site was an easy cost effective way of getting high up on the search engines."That's not correct. If you register multiple domain names - unless that are very generic domains like cars.com (and that would cost you million$) - then to get a benefit in search engines you need to develop sites on each and every domain name.
Register 1 Domain And Stick With ItMy advice is this: Register 1 domain name and focus all of your efforts and resources on that.
Developing 10 web sites to all do the same thing is a false economy and will waste your time, energy and money.

What Pay Per Click Advertising Isn't About

I've just sent through a client a quick report on the impact of us managing his
Google AdWords campaign. It's only been a couple of weeks so the data set isn't great, but it's good enough.
- We've increased the Click Through Rate by 300%.
- We've decreased the average cost per click from $1.62 to 48 cents.
Now looking at those 2 key indicators you'd think they are very important.
They are, kind of.
Most Important Part of Pay Per Click AdvertisingBut by far the most important part of Pay Per Click advertising is the conversion rate of the visitor.
Does the visitor coming from the $1.62 click convert better than the visitor coming from the 48 cents click?
And if yes, is the increased click cost more than compensated by the profit generated?
That's the important stuff.
(With our client the answer is no - we're getting a much better conversion rate from the lower click cost. It's because the keywords we're
bidding on are far more
targeted to our target audience and far more likely to convert into a sale.)
Measure EverythingMeasure everything, but know what the most important measurements are.
For more on successful pay per click advertising check out
my review of this Google AdWords book.

Who says the US is a litigation happy place?
Man loses $54 million pants case.He was suing because the dry cleaner lost his pants. And they had a 'Satisfaction Guaranteed' sign up.
Here are some quotes from the ABC News report:
"On the witness stand, Pearson broke down in tears and had to take a break from his testimony because he became too emotional while questioning himself about his experience with the missing trousers.""Never before in recorded history have a group of defendants engaged in such misleading and unfair business practice," said Pearson. - How can this even get to waste the court's time?
- Surely there must be some penalty for even thinking about bringing this case up?

From # 426 to # 4 - Case Study For High Rankings
A couple of months back we did a little test with an online mate's

It took us just 24 days for

And # 5 for

Internet Primary Source For Car Buyers

BizReport has a
small article on research that 53% of consumers "used the internet as their primary source for gathering information on automobiles when considering a purchase."
It's been our experience that about 85% of people will research a major purchase online prior to buying.
If you're selling a product that people don't buy online you still need a strong Internet prescene.
And by that I mean (at least):
- quality web site with great information
- high search engine rankings
- online advertising

How The Scouts Just Might Win $1,000
I hold the lofty position of the President of the
Palm Beach Scouts (my son Jack is a mad keen Scout).
Under my presidency the Scouts have raised many thousands of dollars and moved from being in rather a lot of debt to now being flush with so much money that we're one of the most financially successful Scout troops about.
All That Had Nothing To Do With MeAs with
almost every success I've ever had, all of that has nothing whatsoever to do with me!
You see, when I got the gig as President (by
unanimous vote I might add - let's not worry that I was the only candidate!) I asked
Mel to be the Fundraising Manager.
The Fundraising Queen Has A Cunning PlanMel is the Queen of Fundraising and has done an amazing job.
In a couple of weeks the Scouts are volunteering at an event where the best group wins $1,000.
$1,000 is a lot to a Scout troop and Mel has her eyes on the prize. She has come up with a cunning (and quite brilliant) plan to win.
I would blog about it but she wouldn't let me until after the event!
Good Business StrategyThat's a solid business strategy - don't give your competitors information they can use to defeat you with.
The other good lesson here is that, like me getting Mel to be the fundraising manager, you need to get the right team around you.

How To Get More Business - Play More Golf
Should you play golf to get more business?
Yep.
In a 2004 survey of 1,000 women golfers, 73% said that the game had helped them develop important business relationships.
This article says that being able to talk knowledgeably about golf has contributed to many executive's success, according to the poll by Golf for Women magazine, investment firm Oppenheimer, and insurer
MassMutual.
41% Say Not Networking held Them BackAnother study, by
nonprofit research group Catalyst, found that, among 705 women managers at Fortune 1,000 companies, 41% said that not participating in informal social networks held them back at work, and the informal networking activity they mentioned most was......golf.

One Of These Images Is Not Like The Others....Can You Tell Which One?
A client called - seems that a remotely hosted image on his site wasn't displaying the image he wanted anymore.
(You should always host images on your own host rather than '
hotlink' to an image on someone
else's site - that way you don't use their bandwidth AND you have full control over the image that displays.)
Anyhow, instead of seeing a nice little icon, the image was changed. See if you can spot the image that doesn't belong.

If you selected '
MyFeedster' then you're wrong I'm afraid.

How To Get Brilliant Keyword Research
A very easy way to do some very effective keyword research is to open up a
Google AdWords account and bid on the keywords you have in mind.
With 24 hours you'll have a very good idea on how many searches are done each month on your selected terms - AdWords stats show you:
- how often your ad was shown,
- in what average position and
- how many people clicked on it.
Then you'll know whether that's a keyword worth targeting with your search engine ranking efforts.
Brendon
Why Your Logo Doesn't Matter
I don't think I'd be on my own if I described the
London 2012 Olympics Logo as rubbish.
To add to that, consider this:
the logo cost 400,000 British pounds. Many 6 year
olds could have done a better job for a free
icecream.
The Logo Has Done It's JobBut the logo has done it's job. And it's done it's job for 2 reasons:
- many people think it's terrible
- it was so amazingly expensive
That has created a
huge awareness of the logo and the 2012 Olympics and London as the host. That's what the logo is meant to do.
A logo isn't the thing that creates the branding.
Nike's logo cost $50. But when you spend hundreds of millions of $ promoting the brand (and the logo) the logo becomes incredibly valuable.
The Logo Isn't ImportantThat's where the London branding team has gotten it wrong. They think the logo is important. It's not.
It's everything about the business that gives the logo value.
So already the London Olympic Committee is perceived as arrogant, wasteful and just plain stupid. That's the branding for the London Olympics so far.

Things That Impress People 101
I did a speech a week ago and ended up with 16 cards from people who came up after and introduced themselves on the day.
I wrote them all a letter afterwards to say "Nice to meet you, etc".
Of those 16, 4 emailed and 1 wrote a letter back me to say how
amazed they were that someone took the time to write a real letter.
They were all quite chuffed.
Something as simple as writing and posting a 'real' letter can have a huge impact on how you're perceived.
The world keeps changing. And sometimes changes back.

How You Can Make A Fortune With A Site That Hardly Makes Anything
Here's the math from
this type of example:
- 1 site a day (3 hours work).
- Site makes just $1 per day.
- Do 6 sites a week.
After 6 months (26 weeks) of easy part-time/after-work or school work you'll be making:
26 weeks x 6 sites a week x $1 per day/per site =
$156 per day.That's $56,940 per year.
Sure beats working for a living.

Not All Marketing Is Good For Us
Not all marketing is good for us - but
smokers with lung cancer already know that.
And bad (as in 'not good for the world') marketing has been going on for years.
Take Shark Fin soup. It's long been an Asian delicacy - diners pay up to $120 a bowl.
Shark Fins Have No Taste At AllFishermen catch the shark, cut off the fins and then toss the shark back to die.
But here's the thing: Shark fins have no taste. No taste at all.
That's the power of marketing - to get you to
pay a premium for something that doesn't exist.
Not quite as bad as selling you something they know will almost certainly contribute to a quicker and agonising death, but not bad all the same.
I'd like to see all marketers sign a
Super Hero type Code of Conduct:
"We will only use our powers for good."

My Favourite Site - Ugg Boots Direct
This
ugg boots and redback boots web site is one of my all time favourites (it's a site we did 3 years ago to test something).

- The web site is terrible.
- It's a mistake.
- I've done, in total, 3 hours work on it.
- It costs me $10 pa for the domain name and $10 pa for the hosting.
- It makes minimal money each day (as low as 50 cents).
This
ugg boots site is a brilliant example of how you can make money only - even with a mistake.
Do you know why I love it? (Do the math above.)

Outback Australia - Kangaroos Galore & Kids Named Mohammed
You know, I've never visited outback Australia.
For those unfamiliar with
outback Australia, here in Australia we see that as the Northern Territory and maybe the deserts of Western and South Australia.
Like many people in Australia I live on the coast - close to the ocean and the cooling breezes.
Not All Outback Here In Australia
Australia is actually one of the
most urbanised countries in the world - that is a greater % of our population lives in cities than most places.
Amazing to think when we have such an enormous amount of space outback!
- No, kangaroos aren't actually everywhere (you'll see one occasionally in the country)
- No, you can't drive from the top to the bottom of Australia in 1 day (it's longer than the US)
- Yes, we do speak English (unless we're really drunk when we speak "Drunkism" - almost our native tongue!)
Expectations Are Hard To MeetExpectations are often very difficult to meet because, like the questions above I've been asked, you just wouldn't pick them as an Australian (although I'm sure many people outside Australia may not know the above).
My expectation of England is that James would be the most common name. Turns out that
Mohammed is about to be the most popular boys name in Britain by the end of the year.
Now there's an expectation I didn't have. What a change in demographics there.
And
'Shirley' is the most common man's name in outback Australia......just kidding with ya! (But
Mohammed really will be the most common boys name in Britain.)

Why I Don't Like Seth Godin
Seth is a
highly respected blogger and author.

I don't like Seth for 1 very good reason -
he's better than me (I'm a typical Aussie guy with a huge ego and to admit that takes quite a bit of courage).
Seth writes very economically and can get to the heart of the matter with a short sentence or 2.
He's brilliant at it.
Take this bit on
The expectation paradox:
"On one hand, you want to raise expectations, because without doing that, you diminish trial. On the other hand, you want to exceed expectations, because that's what generates word of mouth. As word of mouth becomes an ever more important component of marketing, the scales are tipping. Undersell, overdeliver. It's the strategy that works in the long run."
Huge Site For $500With web development I see people overselling all the time. I see young guys promising huge e-commerce enabled sites for $500.
It would take me $500 worth of my time to assess the client's needs and wants and start developing a plan of attack.
The trap you don't want to fall into is where you promise the same thing for $495.
That's the route to quick failure.

The One Thing To Do For A More Profitable Web Site
People are always coming to us for an edge in their web site marketing or development and we can generally help fairly quickly. After all, we do this all day every day and know the industry inside out.
The quickest and easiest action we take is to simply
start testing what's happening on a web site.
For example, if the customer is taking
Google AdWords advertising they often don't have in place any ongoing testing and measuring.
Stop Paying For Bad AdsIt's a simple task for us to initiate keyword testing - we very quickly know what search terms are the most profitable for our client with their Google AdWords campaign.
Then they simply stop paying for ads on the unprofitable keywords and spend that money instead on the most profitable ones.
Profits zoom upwards almost immediately.
The One Thing You Need To DoOne of the most important things you can to help your web site success is to start measuring today.

Ballarat Accommodation - Bed & Breakfast Rather than B & B
We're doing a bit of consulting work on a delightful little
Ballarat accommodation bed and breakfast - it's a nice little site that generates in some business for the owners.
Most People Search Bed and BreakfastIn our review we've found a couple of things with regards to keyword research:
- Twice as many people search for Ballarat bed and breakfast
- Very few people search for Buninyong Bed and Breakfast
rather than "
Ballarat B & B", and (that's the town where the bed and breakfast is situated).
A simple bit of research that helps us target the exact words needed to help this
Ballarat accommodation facility increase it's reach to new markets.
Isn't it great how the Internet has helped small operators reach a far larger audience far easier?

A Sign Of Creativity & Thinking Outside The Square
I drove past a house for sale an hour or so ago.
The house is being sold by a

I didn't have a camera so couldn't take a pic, but here's my artist's impression anyway:

Ha!
Brilliant thinking by Joe to set himself apart from all the other agents.
Sense of Humour.....I, like many others, have already assumed Joe:
- has a good sense of humour,
- thinks a bit differently (great for getting your house attention), and
- is creative.
All attributes that would increase the likelihood of me talking with Joe about selling my house.
Great stuff.

Refinance Home Loan - Big Decisions
I was asked to review a web site that helps people refinance their home loan and one of the first things I look at it the choice influences on people about to refinance their home loan.
I think the top 3 choice influences would be:

- interest rate
- ease of getting a home loan (as in the process is easy)
- ease of being approved for the refinancing of the home loan
What I Think Doesn't MatterAs experienced as I am in marketing and web development, what I think influences people looking to refinance their home loan doesn't matter. Because I'm not the target market.
I'm just going by gut feel.
The Best Way To Ascertain What Influences Your Target MarketA far better way to ascertain what influences people when they search for home loans is:
- ask the target market what they look for
- actually look at how they behave (it's always different to what they say the look for)
The basis of your marketing - whether online or offline - simply has to be research. Because only then can you start to establish a solution that you market wants.
Easy.

"How Easy Is It To Put Statistics Code On My Page?"
That's a question we get a lot. And the answer it "It depends."

It can be
a simple 2 minute job - if your web site has been developed with what's called a footer or include file. That means you can paste the code in 1 place and it appears on every page.
But some sites don't have an inc file so the code needs to be manually inserted
on every single page.
And if you have hundreds of pages then that's a time consuming task.
Cheers

Great Stats = Great Decisions
I mentioned the new web site statistics service from
Get Clicky a
little while back (I actually had a bit of a moan that the Get
Clicky guys didn't have enough pricing information for most people - despite the price being very reasonable).
I signed up and popped the code onto this site as a test.
It's an excellent little statistics program that has a whole range of benefits - it lets you see, in real time, what people are doing on your site. You get some wonderful data - and wonderful data helps you make the right decisions.
Click image for larger viewAs you might be able to see from the image above, this site is getting found quite a bit for "gold coast marathon" on Google.
Allocate Resources As NeededWith that information I can then allocate some resources to that page to make it more useful and/or see if we can make some money from people searching for this major race here in Australia.
Get Clicky - well worth a try, especially for smaller site.

Seminar Update - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Here's the wrap up of our recent
May 16 seminar (you can see the
pre-seminar page here) - it was a seminar to teach people the basics of setting up an online business.
Marketing of the seminar- Mentioned on this site
- Mentioned in our own e-newsletter
- PO Box leaflet drops
- Letterbox drops
- Newspaper ads
- Leaflets in business-related shops
- Direct mail
Most successful marketingOur most successful marketing by far was
our own e-newsletter to our existing clients. A few clients brought along friends.
Number of people who attended
23 people
RSVP'ed to the seminar. All turned up on the night.
CostFrom start to finish the seminar cost in excess of $2,800 (marketing, printing, set-up, room hire, refreshments, etc).
Cost/Benefit analysisThe objective of the seminar was to basically practice doing a seminar (this was our first) and to see if the content is useful for people. It was very positive on those levels.
We also had a number of people (8) contact us post the seminar with more questions and opportunities for work.
A number also requested a more
intensive seminar.
Best thing about the seminarProbably the most pleasing aspect of the seminar was that the majority (60%) of the attendees were either clients or people I've dealt with in the past.
That gave the seminar a real comfortable feel.
The feedback we received back was nothing less than
fantastic and everyone seemed to appreciate the information.
Worst thing about the seminarNothing too bad here - I should have reviewed the room better prior to the seminar (lighting was terrible for filming).
Would I do it again?Good question. Maybe. We've just planned out an
intensive weekend seminar - we'll see how that goes before we commit to more seminars (even the 2 hour seminar required in excess of 10 hours work from me, then 6 from our programmer (Anthony) and 6 from Mel in admin).
The seminar itself makes a decent loss (in excess of $2,000) but the leads it generates can result in solid sales.
A seminar can be an
effective lead generation technique by the looks of it. We didn't
push anything in the seminar in terms of trying to generate leads or sell anything.
To get 33% of attendees come back to use as leads was terrific. And to get the same number asking for a more intensive
Master Class was also a strong indicator.
Cheers

Why Losing Part Of Your Market Can Give You More Business
I was just speaking with my mate Roger who has the local
Palm Beach bike shop. Roger really knows bikes - he's the former head bike mechanic for the Australian Triathlon team.

Roger was telling me that when supermarkets and large variety stores started selling supper cheap bikes, that part of his market collapsed. After all, Roger's cheapest bike is about $249 and the supermarkets had bikes for $80.
But very soon Roger realised something.
Repairs ExplodedThe repair side of his business
exploded and started giving him way more business than his selling of the cheap bikes gave him! (Plus he was making $45 from assembling these bikes for people who couldn't
do it themselves.)
You see, the first thing that happens with a cheap bike is you go for a ride.....and
something breaks. And stuff keeps breaking.
And you keep taking it into Roger who will keep fixing it if that's what you want, or he'll gently guide you to a good quality $249 bike that won't need fixing every week.
Brendon
P.S: The photo is of me and a few others before the Sydney to Surfers bike ride - I'd say the average bike there costs $5,000!
