Why Calling Me A Genius Is Really Smart

by Brendon Sinclair on August 16, 2010

A few days back, the guys from Page One Website Design called me a genius.

…..this in our opinion is genius:

That’s a very smart thing to do.

You see, what often happens when someone online compliments you is that you tell your audience about their kind words (and include a link to the mention as proof).

Like I did.

I did it, like most people do, so I can say to my audience (that’s you mum!) “Heh look here, other people think I’m smart!”

To prove what these guys said, I linked over to their web site.

And as I mentioned here, a link to your web site from a half decent web site (like this one is) can give you a decent boost in search engines.

So the more love you give, the more links you get.

A Beautiful Example Of It I Always Remember

Aaron Wall, one of the web’s best know SEO experts, used a testimonial from me years ago in exactly the same way:

“Sorry for tooting my own horn here, but Brendon Sinclair, of The Web Design Business Kit & Tailored Consulting fame just reviewed my ebook.

As an SEO it is fairly hard to get recognition from people well known in the web design field, and few voices are more credible than Brendon’s, so that review has got me pretty stoked.”

See how Aaron has leveraged my credibility to aid his own credibility.

Simple, effective, ethical and smart.

It does pays to be nice.

Cheers

Brendon

Still good advice after all these years, Brendon. It’s sad to say but in the Internet marketing side of the business world, people like yourself or Aaron Wall, (whom I have dealt with and admired for years now) are still actually “rare birds”. Most people’s pitch centers around a “hooray for me, the other guys are fools” sort of theme … and yet there is so much more to gain in the long run from cooperation than from ‘bad mouthing’.

It’s always worth re-stating that business (at any level) is eventually carried out between two individuals …no matter how big the entities they represent, so manners and being personable will often go a long way farther than anyone can predict.

I think you’re trying to be arrogant for branding reasons :)
I see what you’re doing. Very interesting idea.
