How Stupid Am I?

by Brendon Sinclair on November 5, 2008

Don’t answer that!

This blog has been all over the place over the past year or so. Obviously I’ve lost focus with it and struggled to think what to write.

I’ve just read my online mate Jamie Harrop’s site. Jamie wrote a terrific couple of posts (among many!):

Both of those posts are based on content from my Web Design Business Kit.

I’m pretty darn proud of the kit and even when I read it now, 5 years after it was written and 6 months after the latest revision, I think the ideas are relevant and innovative.

It’s a good book for any business person because it’s all based on real stuff that’s been tried and true.

What I Should Be Writing About

Anyway, reading Jamie’s blog it occurred to me that I should be writing about web stuff – specifically building your web site business (and general web info).

So that’s what I’ll be doing from now. Sure, I’ll include a bit of general stuff here and there, but the focus is now set.

Cheers.

Brendon

Thanks for the link love mate.

Ya know, I kind of like the random focus of this blog. It keeps me on my toes. One day I could get some awesome business advice. The next day I could get the best laughs of the week. And the next… well, you get the idea.

I agree that in business terms, it does make sense to focus on advice for building a Web development company.

But whatever you do, don’t lose that occasional sidetrack to talk about your triathlons, the lessons learnt from the kids, and how Mel is simply far too good looking for you. :-) It’s those posts that really drew me in when I first came upon your blog all those years ago. Amongst the great advice, you gave a face to the writing. Don’t lose that.

I have to admit, I’m on the opposite side of the coin to Jamie. Don’t get me wrong I like the personal touches in the posts, the humour and even the “tough love advice” you have given. However I have noted a significant shift away from Web Marketing advice.

Over the last week I have put the Tailored RSS feed on the “should I unsubscribe” list as I find myself skipping more and more of the posts.

I think I’m with Jamie.

I’ve quite enjoyed reading all of the other stuff about family and friends and physical challenges. Makes me feel like almost one of the gang!

But the reason I arrived at this blog out a couple of years ago, and the reasons I’ve stayed, are the priceless nuggets of great web business advice that are mixed in with the banter and sidetracks.

I mean, I heard of Twitter for the first time here. I couldn’t see the point in it then. And look at me now – still wondering if anyone ever reads mine! lol.

Ok, you just forced my lazy a$$ to react. I don’t participate much (when do you??) but i visit your site regularly. And what draws me most is all the other stuff you write. (Guess, you are my online entertainment channel!!)

I do sometimes feel that you are not writing about web biz as much as you used to and would be thrilled to see more on that topic and biz/marketing in general. But you don’t have to get rid of one good thing to accommodate the other. Use both (gosh, I love simple solutions :) )

@ marc: Marc, don’t threaten to cut off the good guy. He just lost the triathlon. His pride is already hurt. Be nice to him :-) . You know he is too good to be left out.

Back to you, B. Yes, meat is required but don’t loose the spice or the dish will become dull (well not really but you now what I mean).

P.S.: Please tell Jack’s P.Ed. teacher that s/he is a GREAT teacher. LOL

Thanks for the feedback

Great stuff – so I’ll focus back onto web/business stuff and throw in the usual personal stuff as well.
That’ll give it a bit of personality at least.

Cheers and thanks.

@KP
I’m not worried about Brendon’s feelings. I’ll just refer you to Chapter 12 of the Web Design Business Kit :)
