Last Things First – How To Grow Your Business

by Brendon Sinclair on January 4, 2010

Howdy

With 2010 now upon us and me sitting here at the start of another work year, it’s time to start afresh.

Make a plan Stan!
After 12 years in business, here’s my advice for the New Year business planning that I know you’re just about to start:

1.  The first thing you have to come up with is your Exit Strategy.  That is, how are you going to get out of your business?

  • Sell it
  • Hand it on to the kids
  • Keep it running

Whatever it is, know what it is from the start because your Exit Strategy will be central to how you manage your business day to day.

2.  Look at the numbers – have a budget/Cashflow Forecast and check your Profit and Loss at least monthly.

Here’s my favourite spreadsheet for a cashflow forecast (totally free, no registration required).

3.  Now grow your business……dopey.

  • Get more customers,
  • Charge more,
  • Make more repeat sales.

That should be enough for a half decent start.

The other thing you might want to do, that the vast majority of businesses don’t do, is market your business.

Sounds simple, but not a lot of people put a lot of thought into it.

Now stop reading and get on with it!        ;o)

Cheers
