============= Do this one- (1) thing only ============
On the home page blog last week I wrote about speaking with an Accountant client about: The 2 best things he had ever done - in terms of his business.
I received a number of emails asking me what was the best thing I had ever done in my business. Easy!
The best thing I've ever done in my business is get the right people around me. From Jo to Mel to our Accountant to our Lawyer to my brother.......the list goes on.
With the right people around you your business can grow very easily. It can be difficult to identify and recruit the best people - but the effort is well worth it.
It's all about the quality of the people. Everything is subsequent to that.
========== Not one- (1) thing - lots of things ==========
Different topic this one, with a similar heading to the last one.
At the moment our marketing is looking like this:
- Newspaper ads
- Niche market magazine ads
- Newsletter (offline and this one) mailings
- Direct mail
- Sponsorship
- Networking
- Public Relations
- Seminar
That's for the past two- (2) weeks. That's pretty consistent and covers a good range of avenues.
The reason we implement all of these different strategies is so that we have a regular stream of enquiries coming in.
We need to be in front of the client to make a sale, so the things we do are generally lead generation type strategies.
But the most important aspect of our marketing is this: we are actually doing something.
Take an ad and you'll generate sales.
Do direct mail and people will find out about you.
Network and you'll meet businesspeople.
All good, solid strategies for getting the phone to ring.
And with a range of tactics, you won't have all your eggs in the one basket.
============ What makes the difference? ============
We have a client at the moment for whom we developed a little web site. The business is going to be a great success for this client - absolutely no question about it.
Jo and I were discussing this client today and, specifically, what makes the difference. It is an interesting question.
I work closely with some high-profile and very successful people. And I have always said that there is no "secret" to success: it's just a matter of getting the basics right and going from there.
But this client with the web site has given us pause for thought. Here's what Jo and I identified as being the signs (to us) that he would make the business a tremendous success:
1. Goal orientated
2. Committed to the business
3. Seeks and implements expert advice.
4. Loves learning
5. Loves what he is doing
6. A terrific communicator
What do you see as your traits that make you successful? Where can you improve? Could you do with a mentor?
Keep learning and your business will keep growing.
And never, ever give in!
========== Why you should pay me $10,000! ==========
The article below is on the web site and has been for some time. I was reminded of it, and the message I was trying to get across, after I spoke with a media contact today to organise a story on one of Australia's most popular TV shows.
=== Why you should pay me $10,000! ===
I want to say right at the start that I don't usually charge $10,000 for five- (5) minutes work. But if I did, you should pay it. As a guy who predominately sells services - whether it be marketing, media or web consulting - I'm constantly asked to justify my fees.
Now, before you get bored, this article isn't me trying to justify what I charge (I don't actually charge $10,000 for 5 minutes work!). Or what anybody else charges for that matter. This article is to try and set out the thought patterns of those who are successful and those who are yet to reach success.
The multi-millionaire client said, "I'm not going to pay you that!"
I had flown into Sydney for a meeting with a potential client. We discussed at length some marketing work we could do for him (he'd been referred by a friend) and the client was impressed and excited.
He had a reputation as a tough negotiator and a guy who got...read the full article here

============== Changes underway ==============
The Tailored web site is in the process of undergoing a fairly major upgrade.
We'll be organising the content better, as well as redeveloping the site to be more user-friendly (i.e. don't have 2 'blogs')
It's going to take us about four- (4) weeks to complete.
Hang in there for a bigger and better site.
