Simple Proof That Twitter Works As A Marketing Tool

by Brendon Sinclair on May 22, 2009

Some clowns people still don’t understand that Twitter is, indeed, a very powerful marketing tool if you want to use it like that.

Exhibit A: Brendon Sinclair.  That’s me.

I jumped on Twitter last night and ended up on cyclist’s Robbie McEwen’s Twitter account.

I read where he now owns Piccolo, a local cafe.

Mmmmm, Where To Go For Lunch

As the good wife and I were heading back to the office a couple of hours ago after a meeting with our Accountant we were trying to think of where to go for lunch.

Sure enough, I thought of Piccolo because Robbie mentioned it on Twitter.  Here’s some video I shot with my iPhone whilst I was there.

And Robbie’s right – it is a great cafe.  Cheap as chips, unpretentious and friendly service and a great view.

$31 Is Better In Robbie’s Till Than Elsewhere

Sure, it was only $31 for lunch, but that’s $31 Robbie would prefer in his cafe paying his staff’s wages than elsewhere.

And I’m equally sure that Robbie hasn’t meant for it to be a marketing tweet, but that’s what social media like Twitter is – it creates and strengthens connections through communication.

Twitter is marketing (if you want it to be).

Cheers

Brendon

P.S:  Going to Robbie’s cafe is also a good example of the Law of Reciprocity.  Robbie helped my son Jack out in his ride across Australia, so we (as anyone in business should) support those who support us.  Easy.

That’s a very good point! It’s great to see first hand examples of social marketing working.

Also an excellent example of the precept mentioned here before. Business isn’t done between business entities … business, at all levels, is actually done between people.
